Do you think it would be possible to dig up a dandelion root and pot it up indoors so that it would be possible to have dandelion earlier and available all year round?

Julie

Why don't u just use the seeds i mean they grow extremelt fast!

i would imagine so julie, as dandelion is a weed and manages to root right where you dont want it to, so i dont think it should have any problems rooting in a plant pot! just keep it in direct sunlight so that the glass from the window acts as a greenhouse would, then i suppose it may be possible to have it all year round ;)

;) Yes julie, you can cultivate dandelion. As we are in a drought we were finding it hard to find any in our area. So my sister dug up three of hers and we potted them. That was July 2004 and we are still using it on our birds. We did the same with milk thistle.

HMM i got to try this i was told dandelion leaves are great for budgies look at this site http://www.mywestie.com/parsley/bath2.htm

Oh that's great thanks because dandelion is an all time favourite with my two,I'm giving it a go today.

Julie.

Hubby's just informed me the ground is frozen solid so may have to wait awhile-snow forecast too :)

Cool i gotta give it a go too too bad my backyard is covered with 3 feet of snow!

I want snow!!! Cool!!!

I would honestly never have thought of growing dandylions as they are a weed. But i guess it would be nice to have a regular supply! :) What if you're little budgies got into the dandylion farm??? You would have some chubby budgies on your hands!!! :)

i will try and pot some dandelions up for indoor use? are they okay for our birds to eat them .mistymoo

Yes they love dandelions, the flower and the leaves(well mine do anyway!)

Julie

Can they eat the whole flower Julie I havent tride any with mine yet but my garden is full of them at the moment - might wash a few up when I get home.

Yes the whole flower is good! They do end up with orange faces though!

Julie

Hehee! I should see if Blinkie like them! :)

WIKID!!!

Something as easy as dandilion to give the budgies! ITS GREAT!

thought it would be a limited wild UK diet for budgies but apple trees and weeds like dandilions are some of the simplest things to get hold of!

i will just have me a nice big tray and grow a bunch of dandilions on it.. (multipurpose compost shouldnt be bad for budgies should it?)

can have a nice park of grass and dandi's for the bird to feast on :) and also bird poo being good nutes for the plants would make it a nice cycle for a all year round meal :D

can u put a compost grass/plants base for the bird cage?

or will that attract alot of mites etc and make it back for the bird?

like i said above, if the birds poo on the base it will be okay as u can mix it up and it will be a nice mix for the soil.

info will be great.

dandelion :S

i thought dandelion was the yellow plant, y is it that on google it shows the snow types of plants as dandelions?

also where can the seeds come from (in the wild. dry dandelion petels?)?

bhups, dandelion flowers are yellow...at first. When they mature and the seed heads pop out, that is when they look white and fluffy. :P The white fluffy part is the seeds. Haven't you ever picked one and blown on it to watch all the little seeds blow everywhere?

Here's a picture of an immature dandelion. Is that what you were thinking of?

WOW! That's so cool! I always though the 2 flowers were different! :(Laughing out loud):

cheers Rainbow :bluebudgie:

I also thought that they were 2 different plants (Laughing out loud)...

now that i know, TIME TO START POTTING SOME DANDELIONS!!! :bluebudgie:

Thanks alot

Do budgies each garden grass as well?

Mine do-they also quite like to bathe on it in their bathing bowl!

You know when you blow the husks outside, well sometimes a seed will grow in the lawn so I use that grass for them too.
