I've Decided To Move Most Of My Budgies Outside

Most of you know i have 11 budgies living inside my bedroom. I love them all to bits but they are very noisy and messy. I managed to cope with this last year, but his year after being away from them for awhile I haven't managed to re-adapt to their noise. So I built myself a large wooden box that will completely enclose their cage leaving only one side open so that I can roll the cage in and out of it, and have placed it on the deck. It will be completely waterproof when I'm finished, well insulated with blankets and even a shower curtain to go over the front when it rains but will allow them to see through it to outside. It has gotten very cold here at the moment though, so i am going to invest in a box that I can suspend up the top at the back of their cage, with perches in it and maybe a slot for a heat pad or hotwater bottle, just so they have extra warmth and a place to snuggle into. Do you think they'll cope okay with the sudden outsideness and cold?

But Now I have to decide who I want to keep inside. I really want to keep Arkady, Izzy and Bacardi inside, but i can't decide who the 4th budgie should be and ehether or not I should ahve a 4th. I really want to have another blue budgie inside especially Nikio, becase then I will have equal numbers of girls and boys inside. She is also fairly tame. Problem is that she has a boyfriend, who I don't intend keeping inside and I'd feel bad for separating them as they seem quite close. I thought about having a boy as the 4th wheel, but having 3 boys and 1 girl might be a bit too much for a little girl budgie and there might be fights between the boys. Anyone have any ideas?

I'll post pictures of my contraption later. It basically looks like an enclosed aviary with any mesh, which I can roll my large cage into. Once I've moved them out I'll have a whole 1/4 of my room back!!! It takes up a lot of space that cage.

I think it certainly is a better idea to have your birds outside, both for their healthy & yours Sailorwolf, but it's a pity you didn't do it in the warmer weather, as it's already cold enough here, so I don't know what it will be like at your place in NZ. Will be a bit of a shock to them.

I'd watch the weather & move them when you have a few milder days soming up & of course move them early after it warms up a little so they have most of the day to acclimatise.

I can see them all now…pick me Sailorwolf…pick me I’m your sweetest Budgie keep me inside please…

Yes. I'm wishing I did it earlier, but I only just got them back in Autumn time and because I can only work on my aviary cover during the weekends, it has taken me two weeks just to get to applying the first coat of paint. It seems warmer today, so hopefully it will be lovely this weekend and I can move them all out, which will be a mammoth task in itself, as my cage won't even fit through the door, so i have to pull it all apart then put it all back together again.

Haha Mel, timeshare I like that.
