Posted May 4, 200817 yr If you had two birds in a cage, one needing calcium and the other doesn't what would you do? Do you add the calcium anyway even if one bird is fine? Would it course kidneys to fail if that one birds has too much?
May 4, 200817 yr All the birds in my aviary recieve calcium supplements, as long as you are not over concentrating the liquid I can't imagine it causing a problem.
May 4, 200817 yr All budgies should have access to cuttlebone and calcium bells. If you give some of those you will be fine. Try this out Excess calcium shouldn't cause problems if they have free access to water and each budgie will eat what it needs
May 4, 200817 yr Cara if this is with regard to your new girl with Ricketts, a calcium supplement at this point won't fix her legs but she still needs to have access to it.
May 4, 200817 yr Author Cara if this is with regard to your new girl with Ricketts, a calcium supplement at this point won't fix her legs but she still needs to have access to it.I don't care about her legs I love her the way she is, but im just trying to make sure shes happy & healthy she looked horrible when i first found her sitting in the bottom of her dark cage, i hate any people who treat there animals that way.at the moment im not sure if she has ricketts she sitts fine on her perches shes even hanging upside down on her perches ripping the bark of them, Its just her feet turn in a little. I will post some pics of her feet soon.
May 4, 200817 yr Giving Calcium or having calcium available in the way of Cuttlebone and bells is fine but the birds can't process the calcium unless they have access to vitamin D. Calcivet from Vetafarm also has Vitamin D3 Notes:Liquid Calcium and Vitamin D3 supplement for birds. Calcivet is also suitable for small animals. It is in a palatable syrup that can be diluted in drinking water or administered directly to the bird. When used as directed Calcivet will not only supply Calcium but will supplement the birds Vitamin D levels and will boost magnesium intake. These three elements are necessary for the production of egg shells and strong bones.Calcivet can be used in egg bound birds to aid in the expulsion of the egg and in cases of soft shelled eggs to deliver calcium to the shell glad. Calcivet should be administered to breeding birds for approximately one month prior to egg laying and through the chick rearing period. Calcivet can be used with Aviclens, Soluvet, Coccivet but not Psittavet.
May 4, 200817 yr Vitamin D comes from sunlight , so if your birds have access to sunlight than they will absorb the calcium that you supply.
May 4, 200817 yr all good advice, also the way you arrange her cage giving her flat perches or platforms off the floor but still low will probably help her too, one thing is that animals get along they don't feel sorry for each other and you probably can see that your other bird loves her just the same, don't feel sorry for her I know it looks terrible but remember she knows nothing different, helping her get along is the best thing you can do plus all the love you already are giving her .
