Posted April 25, 200817 yr My 2 older budgies are so well trained that I can take them outside without a cage and they won't fly away they happily climb the trees and flap around. One time Chirpy flew from the front garden to the back and into someone else's garden and within 20 minutes she flew back, I was really happy.
April 25, 200817 yr A budgie couldn't fly from the front of the house to the back if its wings were clipped could it??
April 25, 200817 yr that's a worry, my boy honey is totally tame and with full wings, but like they say, don't look a gift horse in the mouth... i wouldn't risk it, no matter how much i trust him... only clipped birds get outside priveliges at my house...

Wow what a risk and I suppose an expection to the rule because if you are a new to budgies please don't risk this because no matter how tame a budgie is partially clipped, full clipped or not clipped it is never a good idea to have them outside not in a cage. 99.9% of budgies will fly off never to be seen again.
April 25, 200817 yr I personally would be worried about hawks and other birds of prey... but I guess this takes if you love something let it go if it comes back.... to a whole new level...
April 26, 200817 yr l would fear that they would take off if a big gust of wind came bye. l hear too many times a budgie is lost. l guess l would just not take a chance of losing my budgies.
April 26, 200817 yr I have only done that once when I was younger with one of my clipped budgies but I would be too scared to bring them outside if their wings weren't clipped.
April 27, 200817 yr Free flight of parrots is becoming more common, but unless you have them well-trained for recall, it is not worth the risk for taking even a clipped bird outside unless in a cage or harness. Recall training is very time-intensive and not for everyone, if you are recall training it should be done under the advice of a professional if you've never done it before. From what little I have read on it, there are many skills an indoor bird needs to learn before you even think about taking them outside. You need to have 100% compliance as all it takes is one time for the bird to fly off and not be able to return. I think it is normally the larger parrots that are trained for free-flight, not usually budgies. Even clipped birds can fly away and be lost with a small bit of wind, especially budgies, as they are very light birds and strong fliers. Edited April 27, 200817 yr by Rainbow
April 27, 200817 yr I'm wondering if there's harnesses small enough for budgies on the topic. I've never seen one on a budgie XD As for your birds, yeah it must seem nice, but I remember back in my old house cats used to come into our gardens. I'm not sure how it is are your place, but since cats are frequently let out without harnesses / bells on their collars I've seen alot of my wild birds I used to feed dead. I'd be worried about that personally.
