Posted April 24, 200817 yr Hello again. I'll cut to the chase. I keep the birdcage of my budgies in my room. That's were I am pretty much all the time when I'm home. As a matter of fact I put the cage in the balcony during day and bring it back inside when it gets dark. So we're sleeping together Thing is that a friend of mine told me that its dangerous to keep the birds in the room because they can infect you. Is it really dangerous? Should I let the cage permanently outside? Thanks for your replies Edited April 24, 200817 yr by Apostolos
April 24, 200817 yr first you should never have your cage permanantly outside unless it is a secured aviary the feather dust is bad for people's lungs especially if you have more then one budgie and when they go through a molt so that yes can be harmful. the other thing you can get from birds is psittacosis which is rare people who get this usually have large scale avaries where birds come in an out all the time and that is why they do strict quarantine. One of our members, Kaz contracted this and she is okay she was just very sick. I would suggest having your bird in a different location because of the feather dust and molting more then anything. If that is not possible just keep the cage very clean. BUT NEVER leave a bird outside in a cage bad things do happen. Welcome.

I would prefer to keep the cage in my room if it is to be kept inside the house since my room is the most budgie friendly room. In the rest of the house someone will smoke or use a perfumed candle or other stuff that I read arent good to be used around budgies. Now about leaving the cage outside. I only put it there when im in my room and therefore i can watch it. It won't be left unattended for more than 5 minutes. I clean the cage every day or every second day maximum. With cleaning i mean changing the newspaper under the cage and clean the bottom part of the cage. Would that be sufficient? What does molting mean? :ashamed:

Molting is when they will lose there old feathers and they are replaced with new feathers. they will molt a couple of times throughout the year, some times it will be a light molt and then a heavy molt.
April 25, 200817 yr I currently have 11 budgies in my room and have always had budgies in my room and have never gotten sick. Just keep it clean and you should be okay. I'm trying to reduce my numbers at the moment more because they are noisy rather than unclean
April 25, 200817 yr I love budgies, but i don't think i could sleep with them in my bedroom. I love their sweet budgie smell, but the dust gets up my nose.
April 25, 200817 yr I feel dirty if i have birds inside too long :s so unless kept in the brooder as babies, i try to keep them out back
