Yolk??? Do you know what it is called, I'd like to read up on it I can find anything re: loose yolk in Budgies .... It is an orange yellow colour???

She laid her last egg ages ago though

Neat is here a website where I found information it is called Egg Yolk Peritonitis, http://www.avianweb.com/eggyolkperitonitis.html, if this is what it is it sound pretty serious and an avian vet should be consulted immediately.

SNAP!! hehe I was just about to post that same site :D

I hope she hasn't got this as it sounds pretty bad, and your hen seems to be well other than the lump

Having recently studied animal anatomy as part of my final year of a uni degree I'm gonna stick my neck out and say it doesn't actually sound like the same thing to me. The description essentially says that the infected matter is internal (in amongst the abdominal tissues) as a diffused series of smaller masses, not just under the skin as a big bump. Hopefully this is not what she has but she still needs to be seen by a vet soon.

Sailor - With yolk in the coelom, would you be able to see it through the abdominal muscles and peritoneum and all that? I'm thinking it's subcutaenous. If it were any other person on another site I would have said lipoma with xanthoma, but Neat's birds have exercise and veggies and all that. Can lipomas start in a non-obese bird? It is a neoplastic process I guess. Do you have any ideas?

Neat, if you are willing to handle her (don't if you think it will be too stressful) does her belly feel fluid, soft or firm? If you lift up the feathers elsewhere on the belly is it the same thing (the yellowy colour)?

The coelom is essentially the body fluid surrounding the internal organs, there is a layer of muscle/fat over the top of it so you wouldn't expect to see it as a singular mas under the skin like that.

okay I am doing it all now and will post clear picOk The Lump is soft and moveable NOT HARD !!!!It is of a Yolk Colour with some white bits in it ..Her upper body is of a different colour to the lump I am editing the picture and will post soon

Get her checked ASAP, if it is peritonitis or an abscess she may be developing an infection in the deeper tissues which has broken through to just under the skin.

Flash as used so the red on the picture is more of a dark orange

picture has me a bit worried. The yellow bit seems to be the same colour/consistency as this bird with an (extreme) fatty lump - lipoma/xanthoma.

Which came from this site - http://www.birdhealth.com.au/bird/er/conditions.html

I'm also a bit worried about the dark red above that - from what I have seen normal skin should be a fleshy pink.

:D

I'm thinking a vet visit somehow.

I hadn't noticed that dark red! There are a few diseases in poultry that can present a little like that, sort of a red rash on the belly. I think you should definately get her looked at tomorrow, I know you are worried about the chick but given the vet is so close I think you need to decide whether you are more willing to risk the chick or the hen. If you lose the hen you may lose the lot of course...

I agree it looks like a lipoma (that I have seen too just pics here too on the boards), Robin's bird (phoebe) had one maybe she can see it too and the redness is maybe from her plucking and irritating it, many are treatable and can be shrink with medicine some are not but an avian vet at this point will know best. I agree with melbourne budgie best to take the chance and have her looked at.

Now that I've seen it it doesn't look like it could be a yolk, however I can't be sure with out actually holding the bird in my hand. Their skin is very see through, you can see their organs normally. So I would think that you could see a yolk too. Chryso: I guess a lipoma could happen anyway even in a healthy bird, just less likely. Cause a neoplasm is when the cells aren't under any control and they do what they like. Get her checked out. Bring babies along.

Hello Everyone …..

Firstly

RED11-1.gif

To those of you who helped me: I was freaking out a lot …..

The results from the vet:

IT IS A FAT PAD !!!!

Because she as over plucked you can see it …

The muscle wall separates due to laying and sitting on eggs.

There may be a little hernia but nothing to worry about she is fine …

glad to hear the budgie is fine
