Can This Be An Abscess

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I have few questions re: Mybird ...

She has plucked her self stupid while sitting on her eggs ( I know this is a comon thing)

BUT!!! This afternoon While checking the bub I noticed that there is like a Orange thing on her

lower belly, I am not sure if this is her skin ( doubt it as it is slightly raised) I thought maybe it is

an Abscess from sitting on her eggs, this hasn't happened to any of my hens before ...

I want to take her to the vet to get checked out but as she is sittng and feeding a baby I have

my reservations?

Any ideas, I will try to find my camera to take a photo, she won't letme go near her either which is strange

Didn't think of that Melbourne ... YOUR AN :angel1:

I will call first thing in the morning to see .....

sorry to hear you have problems with your hen, i hope you can find a avian vet that does housecalls.

maybe it is a follicle infection from plucking? Can you provide a picture?

I got "Mybird" ...( this is what dave called hs bird ) It looks like it is her skin/ belly it's low just before

her legs ... This is the best shot I could get though DSCF0544.jpg

Hmmmmm... :hap:

That smudge of yellow/orange - Poor bird, it looks sore. is it infected? is there any puss?

Sorry i cant get much from that picture other than its colour

I have just looked at your picture again at 10% of the size. It looks much clearer when small.

I still think it looks infected to me :hap: I hope you can get her to a vet, she may need an antibiotic ointment

I know it's not ideal Neat but if you can't find a vet that come out there is a broad spectrum antibiotic for birds that is available at some pet shops. It's called Avicycline. If it really comes to it and you have no other way of getting her treated then this might be of some assistance. I keep some in the house for just these sorts of situations in my birds and also my pet rodents.

Should add that there is of course no guarantee that the 'infection' she has is sensitive to that partiular product but if it comes to it...

I am giving that antibiotic to BG at the moment - because its an oral antibiotic, i don't think it will be suitable while Neat's hen is feeding a chick.

Sorry must have missed that, I thought she was just sitting. I'm not sure about it's use in baby birds, although I have used it on very young rodents on occasion (3-4 weeks old) with no problems. If the chick is not tiny it might be worth the risk.

Otherwise if you can't find someone to do housecalls it might be time to bite the bullet and whisk her away for a quick checkup, bubs should be okay for a short time if you're quick.

The photo is too unclear to be advising so I wont. I would say this is something you need a vet for.

okay i took pics down to the vet ..... They can't do home visits as too busy

1 of 3 things

1. A Herina

2. a Tumor

3. Fat deposit

They advised me once the eggs hatch and are older to bring her in .... However if anything comes out of her (guts etc) to bring her down asap ......

It is between her legs an up a little near pelvic bone .....

I was going to suggest a fat deposit. Did it only become obvious when she plucked or did it appear in an area that you had previousy seen was okay?

You know what Melbourne , I think you are on the money .......again

In one of my post I stated that she looked swollan, However she was due to lay and egg so had Budgie Bum Egg Bum ... which ever ,

Did it only become obvious when she plucked !!!!

OMG !!!! What if all my birds have this ......

I just dn't get it ... They eat greens and etc good seed ......

Some birds are just more prone to them probably, just like humans :P

I would still get it checked by the vet once she is able to be moved but for the moment I would assume that it is innocent until proven guilty...if only to make yourself feel better for the moment :D

It could be a yolk that did not move into her uterus and is now floating around her abdomen, if this is the case 2 things could happen. It will be reabsorbed, or she could get peritonitis. I think it is a yolk, maybe because it is yellow.

Is it hard?? If it is then it can't be a yolk. Does it move around? Does she look distressed? How is her breathing? Listen to it. what does her breathing sound like?

caution: Do not give antibiotics if they are not prescribed and you do not know how to use them or for what. This is quite dangerous and can result in a mass infection of your flock with a resistant bacteria in the worst case scenario.

She looks pretty perky. Just keep an eye on her. It does kinda look like a yolk. (I don't know for sure) Saffy had one and she was fine. But just keep an eye on it.
