Posted April 7, 200817 yr Latte and Cookie are 5 weeks old and they both fledged yesterday. I have always put millet sprays in their nest box hoping to speed up the weaning process. Today i have them inside for their daily training and they are eating from the little seed dish i provide for them I watched them really closely and they are eating and not just playing with it. Is is possible for 5 week old chicks to be eating on their own enough to leave their parents??? They haven't really learnt to fly yet either - i normally leave babies with their parents until they are 6 - 7 weeks min. Should they stay out with their parents for a bit longer or is it okay for them to come inside if they are eating?
April 7, 200817 yr If they have been brought inside and away from the parents, more often than not the parents will stop feeding them anyway...out of sight out of mind...even for brief periods. So, its good that they are eating....time to give them the eggfood with vegies, budgie starter and seed through it though, so they will eat more and easier food for them to process.
April 7, 200817 yr Author Thanks Kaz, They headed straight for the seed dish when i brought them inside and they did have empty crops mum and dad must have forgotten them. Too busy babying their youngest They are fed and happy now I will make up some egg mix with vegies and seed for their dinner
April 7, 200817 yr Author Cookie and Latte didn't think much of their dinner of egg and biscuit mix, vedgies and seed. I was getting worried about them so i put them back in the aviary. Barney, came straight up to them and fed them both!!! Colony breeding - I guess Barney is a potential dad too :hap:

Dont you have real eggs in your house ? :hap: :hap: :hap: :hap: Actually i don't have any eggs at the moment - we are not real egg eaters and the only ones i have are the last budgie eggs from my breeders hahaha - don't get me started on budgie egg ommlits :hap: :hap: I have cheated - I have now moved Barney inside with Latte and Cookie Best of both worlds - He is doing the hard work of feeding them and they are not going to turn wild from bing in the aviary Why would a male feed chicks that are not his???? - Barney is really good with them too
April 8, 200817 yr I dont know why he would, but you certainly cant look a gift budgie in the mouth!! :wine That's great he is helping you out. I always have little panics when I bring my babies in until I see them eating. I usually tend to leave them in the aviary about 3 or 4 days after they have fledged and they pretty much seem to have the hang of feeding themselves by this time
April 8, 200817 yr It sounds like things are going well with Latte and Cookie, hopefully Barney will keep helping you out.
April 8, 200817 yr Author He is being a great foster dad They are spending their first night inside and the three of them (Latte, Cookie and Barney) are all roosting together (with full crops) on the perch Edited April 8, 200817 yr by **Liv**
