Posted April 7, 200817 yr After finding out that Violet is a skyblue violet i have been reading about violets and studying the various shades of blues in my birds and have noticed that Violet's father has also got the darker markings around his neck so is he a skyblue violet as well or do the markings have to be darker then his. Before i start cabinet breeding i want to understand the genetics more so i can hopefully breed a violet. After reading info through this forum about violets am i correct in saying that to see a violet gene in a bird that is not a visual violet it would show by markings around the neck.
April 7, 200817 yr Deb I am not 100% on that but I am 98% sure this is correct .... I too going to try to breed my first violets once the cabinet are up and raring to go : ) Good luck mate
April 7, 200817 yr Author Thanks Neat i hope your breeding goes well, i really would love to breed a violet so i am trying to work out who to put together for me to get a violet.i am still waiting for my husband to built my breeding room.
April 7, 200817 yr I don't see the violet gene in him, but you're right in saying you'll see the violet tinge around the neck in a bird carrying it. Look up my pictures of Precious, she's a sky violet - bird carrying violet ( can see the violet tinge around the neck) Edited April 7, 200817 yr by *libby*
April 7, 200817 yr He should have a violet Hue (tinge) around the neck/shoulder area if he is carrying the violet gene. I cant really tell in your photo if your boy has the hue or not - Violets are VERY Pretty - I have lots of them
April 7, 200817 yr Author Thanks Libby for the picture, he has a mark around his neck but it is probably more a dark blue than a violet colour. His daughter is a sky blue violet that is why i was wondering if he was one.
April 7, 200817 yr Author i think she was a normal green, she flew away when they where in the nest and it was before i joined this forum and i did not know types very well so i can only guess at what she was as i have no picture. In the clutch she had their was 2 skyblue spangles, i skyblue violet spangle and yellowface type 2 blue normal
April 7, 200817 yr Odd... maybe she was a yf violet? i have a cock from Karen who's a yf violet and looks green?
April 7, 200817 yr Chances are the mother was YF type 2 whatever as she would have looked green to the untrained eye and the dad does seem to be carrying violet Edited April 7, 200817 yr by KAZ
April 7, 200817 yr Author i can not remember what she exactly look like. i mainly wanted to know if Romeo is carrying the violet gene because i want to breed a violet and i am trying to work out which birds i have that would produce a violet and then i can work out what new birds i need to look for.
April 7, 200817 yr Chances are the mother was YF type 2 whatever as she would have looked green to the untrained eye and the dad does seem to be carrying violet as stated he is carrying violet
April 7, 200817 yr Thanks Kaz, i did not see your post till after i posted. Find him a violet hen, violet dom pied, YF violet, or a strong cobalt or mauve hen
April 7, 200817 yr he looks like he may be carrying violet (the photo is a bit dark though)... I'd pair him with a mauve for 50% visual violets and 50% cobalts. If you pair him with a cobalt then you'll have 25% visual violet, 25% cobalt, 25% sky violet, 25% sky.
April 7, 200817 yr Author Thanks for everyones suggestions for a hen for him, now i need to go looking for one. Edited April 7, 200817 yr by deb
April 7, 200817 yr Author i love looking for new birds, my cabinets will not be ready for 6 months so i have plenty of time to look. The last 3 years when i have colony bred he has been my best father so i would like to get one more clutch out of him. He is 5 years old.
