Posted April 6, 200817 yr As budgies are masters of not showing any ailments, because in the wild if they did they would be knocked off by the first predator. It is important to weigh you budgies and keep a record of the result. Something my Vet reminded me of recently. The birds can be quite ill and not show it for months, when they do finally succumb to the illness it is a lot harder to bring them back. I have bought birds back from the brink in the past, but most are useless to a show breeder as any pressure put on the bird through breeding or showing and they fall apart again. So get a little container and put the on the scales. Zero the scales, then pop the budgie in. Wait for it to settle and take a reading. Record the weight and the date. Once every 2 weeks should be enough ( It's not Biggest Loser ) Once you have recorded half a dozen results you can plot them on a chart. Can be useful if you are changing the birds diet or he has been relocated to see if it impacts the weight.
April 6, 200817 yr excellent point and glad you brought this up :hap:. we have an article in our FAQ about this too Click here for Weighing your Budgie if you are also interested too.

Can be useful if you are changing the birds diet or he has been relocated to see if it impacts the weight. That's a great tip especially to keep a record of the weights too. Just a little miffed that anyone should consider any creature "useless" just because they can't be showed..... it's my opinion that animals have more worth in their souls than being a show or breeding object, they are living things and not there for our pleasure, whatever that may be. It's my opinion only and I would hope I'm entitled to voice it because I'm an animal lover and whatever animal it is..... it's not there for humans to use at any cost. Chrissie :hap:

Chrissie :hap: Dont be too quick to judge and jump to conclusion that arent meant the way you took it to be. There is often misunderstandings in the written word. I think the point is here that a bird that has been ill and continues to not be 100%, will fall ill repeatedly due to the stresses of breeding and showing. Thats the way I read this anyway. Stress equals illness and showing and breeding are stresses...and if a bird has or carries a hidden illness then it cannot be either shown or bred. Thereby if you are a show breeder and not a pet budgie keeper...the bird is either no good for showing and certainly no good for breeding. Not saying that its a totally useless bird...just that it cannot be shown or bred. :hap: Edited April 7, 200817 yr by KAZ
April 7, 200817 yr I agree with Kaz. The term useless can mean many things. A bird useless in the breeding cage or show can be an excellent pet bird for some one. But not a show breeder. Please remember that a broken clock is correct twice a day.

Not saying that its a totally useless bird...just that it cannot be shown or bred. Kaz and Daz see my point that I was trying to make. I treat every life with the respect it deserves. Maybe a poor choose of words, 'useless' in a show point of view. Such birds( luckily there few and far between ) spend there days in the aviary. Tou can sell it for a pet but not to another show breeder. I also respect every ones point of view as well and understand it. Everyone starts as a pet budgie owner some go on to the show scene some are just happy to keep them as pets. If you have ever been to a show and seen how much pampering these birds get you would see they are very well looked after. Some birds stress, Some just sit there oblivious at all the fuss. They are all individuals. The modern show budgie is a product of man. An attempt to breed the perfect budgie to the society standard. Without the breeders of the past we wouldn't have all the beautiful colours and different varieties we have today. Edited April 7, 200817 yr by throwback

They are all used to being handled and are very much used to being picked up and checked out.
April 7, 200817 yr knowing throwback, I didn't take it wrong at all...if that helps , again a very useful topic indeed!!
April 8, 200817 yr knowing throwback, I didn't take it wrong at all...if that helps , again a very useful topic indeed!! I sometimes come over a bit short and direct, Some of my posts do also come across as though I'm preaching this view is the correct one! But this is not my intention. Just as well Daz, Kaz, Elly, lonebudgie and others all know me by now and sit there and :yellowhead: at my rantings. I am testing what I know to the max and pushing the birds at a early stage. I have 4 with young the rest 8 nests with with over 5 eggs per nest so far. Even my best to best pairings that usually never go to nest are working. I'm sure the budgie gods are laughing at me waiting to bring me down a peg or two! Stay tuned for the CRASH!! One of my best pairings that have 5 eggs so far "> ">

Chrissie :hap: Just a quick note on how reading posts can be miss read , "They are living things and not there for our pleasure". I personally get alot of pleasure from my birds , that is why I keep them . If you get no pleasure then why have them. I think the moral here is not to read to deeply into the post , We are all Budgie lovers and probably all animal lovers too. I know I am. :hap:
April 9, 200817 yr you have that right lonebudgie is it all in your own perspective...I would say we are both here to help each other out in many ways for sure .
