Posted April 4, 200817 yr I bought a new addition last night from my local pet shop. George, Franklin and Balki will have a new friend soon. It is in quarantine at away from the others and I am training it at the moment. When I got it home it was very frightened and couldn't keep still. Today it is better and more calm. I can feed it seed with my finger and it lets me scratch it cheeks sometimes. It likes sitting on my shoulder. I noticed that it sits lop-sided and does not sit up straight. You can see this in my second picture where it is eating seed. I'm not sure if this should be of any concern. I was thinking maybe it has something to do with it being young. I was told by the pet store that it is 11 weeks old. Does that seem right from looking at the pics because I'm not too sure? The pet store did not know whether it's a he or she. I know this question gets asked alot but can anyone tell whether it's a girl or boy? I'm in the process of giving it a name.
April 4, 200817 yr Seems to be a HEN and YOUNGER than 11 weeks for certain. 5-6 weeks is my guesstimate. Check its feet and see if it sits well on its feet and not the sides of them. Wings are dropped, and yes...there seems something not quite right. Will wait for further reports and photos
April 4, 200817 yr Author Thanks. I thought is was younger. It sits on its feet but the feet are spead out a little. The right foot does not provide as much support as the left. April 4, 200817 yr As she is obviously young, keep an eye on her bodyweight and be sure she is eating all she can. Also boil some eggs and mash it up and serve with some grated carrot and dark greens...sprinkle some seed over and maybe mix through some budgie starter.
April 4, 200817 yr I agree with Kaz.... 1. looks way too young look at the beak it is still black tipped .... 2. something doesn't look "right" ...with the feet.... maybe a case of splayed legs that wasn't corrected ... Does it perch??.. i think it is male but that is me ..... Edited April 4, 200817 yr by Neat
April 4, 200817 yr Author It can perch okay. I agree and think it may be splayed legs. April 4, 200817 yr Splayed legs would be worse than that if untreated. More likely just a calcium deficiency in the breeding of parents birds causing a rickets issue with the baby. Pop some calcivet into its food or water...just a small few drops or to dosage requirements.

April 4, 200817 yr you received great advice from Kaz and I agree with her on the age looks very young. I got Merlin at 11 wks and he didn't look that young. (looks male to me though according to my screen )
April 4, 200817 yr Hey... what a cutie. I hope everything works out for the little one. My first thought was male... but I could be wrong. BUT I do agree he looks younger than you were told.
April 4, 200817 yr I can see you've got a heap of help already so I'll just say congrats on the new addition.
April 4, 200817 yr She could be sitting that way simply because of the age, definately no more than 6-7 weeks I'd guess.
April 25, 200817 yr Seems to be a HEN and YOUNGER than 11 weeks for certain. 5-6 weeks is my guesstimate. Check its feet and see if it sits well on its feet and not the sides of them. April 25, 200817 yr Kaz, how did you see hen in her. i thought they had to have white rings around the nostril to be hen and that purple meant male.i would love to be able to work out male from female when they are young.

What throws a lot of people off with some birds is the ones that start out with a black beak and a black wash over the cere....it creates a new colour over the cere and you have to be able to see past the black parts to read the true colour underneath. With the black over top even if its ever so slight, it makes the cere look purplish when its isnt really.
April 26, 200817 yr Thanks Kaz, i have also read that male and female ceres are a different shape, males cere are more rounder, is that correct.
