Posted April 3, 200817 yr Hi there, :greenb: I might get a small outdoor aviary for my budgies. How many budgies can live happily in an aviary 1.5mx1.5m and 2m high? I don't want it too crowded. :hap: Thank you very much for your help. Lea
April 3, 200817 yr About 25 if not breeding, no nestboxes, plenty of feeding stations and water drinkers, and lots of perching arrangements
April 3, 200817 yr Author Thank you very much for your reply. :hap: Wow - that many? I would be happy with 10 or so budgies . How many could I keep in this aviary if I want to let them breed? Cheers, Lea

Cheers, Lea Breeding is best done by pulling out pairs from the aviary into a breeder cabinet...one pair to a cabinet.
April 3, 200817 yr If you want them to breed you have to make sure that all the nest boxes are the same height and that there are twice as many nest boxes as there are pairs... And then you've got to make sure that there is room for the chicks once they have fledged...
April 4, 200817 yr Jimmy there also needs to be a min of a 2 foot ( 60cm gap) between nestboxes too ...... This may help with fighting hens ... BUT NOT ALWAYS as I found out the hard way!
April 6, 200817 yr Author :yellowhead: Thanks for your replies and help. I don't want to breed budgies at this stage, but maybe next year or so. Just wanted to know what size avairy would be best to keep 6-10 budgies. I would like to build it (or buy one) big enough so there's enough room if I decide to colony breed in future. :yellowhead:
April 12, 200817 yr I just wanted to chip in and say that i have an aviary exactly that size and i currently have a very comfortable 23 in there, but have had as many as 28 (getting a bit on the squishy side). The important thing to remember that having plenty of perches is the key to how many birds can fit in an aviary. They do spend the majority of their time sitting on one perch or another after all! Hi Bea. Thanks for the information. Just bought a second hand aviary - jiiiipiiii - so happy! Thought about building one - but that would take forever as my hubby is a slow builder - so I couldn't wait and bought a small second hand aviary. This is my first outdoor aviary and I think it's a good size to start with. Not exactly the size I mentioned in my first post. The one I got is 2m wide and 1m deep and 2m high. I've got 4 budgies at the moment so they will have plenty of space . Can't wait to pick it up!
April 18, 200817 yr Great news about your aviary You must be really excited As you get your budgies to fill your aviary, try and remember to quarantine them to prevent illness......thats any new ones kept in a seperate cage away from the others for at least 30 days. Cant wait to see your pictures
