Going Shopping 4 Spike

Featured Replies

Hello everybody...

Going to do some late night shopping and on my list is things 4 Spike!!

Food : will get some dark greens/corn/millet/carrot and can anyone think of anything else?

A nice dish that will hang on the side of the cage to put his vegies in..

While writing this Spike has found that he can lift 1 of the doors for his seed dish and is now flying around lounge room (stupid vet) did his wings yesterday afternoon after a lecture about if you don't want him to fly you should of got a mouse or something else and why do you want this to be done

No Impressed as there is 2 ceiling fans in the lounge and dining room and just a couple of weeks ago they were on 24/7 :hap:

This Vet is the same place as I last took the late Huey to but this was a different person, last time with Huey I asked for a Avain Vet...

:ygbudgie: Have fun, don't forget the cuttle bone and clip for it!

Spike is flying around after having his wings clipped? :hap:

I give my budgies some apple too, I dont know whether he has developed a taste for apple or not but he might like it  They love corn on the cob or off. I usually have a bag of frozen corn and peas in the freezer for when I dont have fresh corn and they seem to love this just as much.

Most people here seem to use pegs on the top of their cage doors to keep them closed for clever little budgies like Spike :D

The vet shouldnt lecture you, as you pointed out, you have ceiling fans, so its for his safety as well as for a training aide.

Obviously he has settled quickly considering he is already working out escape routes :D

Hi Tracy he WAS quite not any more :D He's climbing and flying about his cage trying to find that great escape and has tried both seed+water feeders to see if it will work again :(Laughing out loud): Running about squawking when he can't get what he wants to happen!!The frozen corn is a top idea too!! will try some apple(no seeds)..And my vet hmm spike has to go back for free and this time I will see if I can get the 1st Avain vet I seen, also wing clipping should be done as a training aid Yes??

Well I guess that really depends on the bird really. I have had a few of my babies go to homes where I have handled them daily before they go, and I start handling them as soon as their new owners decide that is the baby they want. I havent heard that any of them have been clipped as when they get their baby home, they start handling them straight away also and they tame up quickly without being clipped. It's really a personal decision, but if Spike could be in danger from fans etc, its also a safety decision.

I love shopping... esp for my animals! It all sounds really good. Don't forget some toys too (no mirrors). As to the wing clipping, obviously it wasn't done correctly, and I'm hoping they fix it for free this time! AND they shouldn't have lectured you about it. You are being a responsible pet owner... not a bad one... :D Good luck with the re-clip and I'm glad he's settled in well!

Well my plan was to let Spike settle for 24hrs and them get him out to do tunneling exercises and some step ups if he wanted to... :D

Also I would have closed the dining room door and lounge door had I known he could still fly and not had the whole house open, I do mean fly as there was no fluttering about :D

YEAH !!! I love shopping espcially for the birds too ( $2 dollar shops have great cheap toys )

THing Neat thought of

1. Pegs for your doors (Laughing out loud) .......

2. Mineral blocks...

I use frozen vegies too when i can't get fresh peas and corns ( get the Good brand) as the No name brand is **** and well mine won't eat it ....

Check the First aid kit FAQ and stock up on thoses too and Wormer ...... Ummmm

HAVE FUN SHOPPING ... I bet you will com back with a tone of stuff (Laughing out loud)

hhahah silly vet!!!

shopping for birds is very addictive!!

Silly vet that's not what I was saying :) Toys that will fill the cage yeah easy to do if your not careful... :sport:

I am very surprised the vet (was he an avian) was against wing clipping for saftey that would worry me in the future taking him back if he made you feel like you made the wrong decision, each bird situation should be accessed different and you having his wings clipped was good decision on your part since you do have the ceiling fans on 24/7.

Glad you have a good time shopping for him.

I have changed vets for criticism. It's expensive to take your pet to a vet and you try to do the best you can by your pets and you really dont need a vet who YOU are paying for a service, to make you feel bad.

Sounds like Spike is one spoiled budgie!! Glad to hear everything is going well :)

Update, Did the vet re: clipp the wings??? And did he charge you again???? I hope that you set him right about being a responseable owner

Hi Neat

Re: Vet I have not long got off the phone, the vet I seen on Wednesday IS an avain Vet and I told them he did the clipping wrong and can I see the avain vet that i seen last time!! no he's gone on 2 weeks holiday :( could you come back for a re clipp??

So I have made an time 4 Monday afternoon but the more i think about it the less i want to see this particular vet I DON'T like him :(

Also reading some of the F.A.Qs in the bit about wing clipping yes/no shows which are the primary flight feathers and which are the secondary, well I'm not sure looking on Spike but it looks like the secondary or inner flight feathers have been clipped as the outer ones can still be seen :rip:

mmm :rip: . If I were you you, I would hold off on the re-cilp until the avain vet you like comes back. This other vet obviously has no idea what they are doing or they would have done it right the first time. I'd be worried about them doing damage and more stress to your little fella. AND, as he is only new and young, you could just use that two weeks time to tame him in his cage and get him used to you and your voice. That's just me... but you do what you feel is best. You could also look for another vet if their is one around. Good luck mate!

That's an understatement and i've only ever dealt with 2 ;)

ALWAYS STICK WITH YOUR GUT FEELING !!!!!! .....

I am suprised that this is in fact an avain vet you'd thing they'd CLIPP WING PROPERLY .... just sound like a normal vet ... So hard to find good ones and when you do they are never there when you need them ... Best to spend extra bonding time with the little one and hopefully yo may not need the cliPPing
