April 6, 200817 yr The chick is doing rather well, such good parents! It is such a cutie, they are so sweet when they are fluffy like that!I just posted 2 14 hours ago! You know that we can't get enough of pics,it should have been 14 2 hours ago! :(Laughing out loud):
April 12, 200817 yr Author Well this odd looking "budgie" is still doing very well! It is starting to colour up. It is definately the runt of it's nest as it's 2 siblings in the original nest are twice it's size and development. I am thinking I may have a girl here but need more feathers yet.
April 12, 200817 yr Its looking good Karen, just be careful with it if it’s in an aviary with other budgies, when it leaves the nest. Budgies can be so aggressive, I had Cockatiels breeding in an aviary with, just some young Budgies, that had only recently left the nest themselves, but when the young Cockatiels left the nest & were still uncertain, they killed some. Also I once gave two Cockatiel eggs to some African lovebirds, the parents were great & raised the young real well, but the moment they left the nest, the other love birds killed them both. It would have been okay I think if they had been in a cabinet.
April 13, 200817 yr Author I have bred budgies for many years and have bred other parrots and know exactly what budgies (and other parrots) are capable of. I do not breed in a colony situation. I would never make that mistake with the lovebirds (or other species) as it is well known what they would do.
April 20, 200817 yr Author Sadly the parents not only stopped feeding her they started plucking her. After removing the male budgie yesterday I made the decision to leave the chick with the female hoping she'd feed her. She did not and with the little one on death's door I removed her around 10.30am this morning. I started her on almost pure liquid weet-bix fed hourly. Second feed I put some probiotic in a small cup with 3ml water which she drank. She has bounced back but is partially paralysed. Just before our dinnertime I gave her her dinner. She is very demanding and this feed she actually started making noise: Bring that spoon here NOW!!!
April 20, 200817 yr aww, how gorgeous! she/he did well for starters... I'm sure you'll be able to nurse it back to health... shame the parents turned What's paralysed on it?
April 20, 200817 yr too bad to hear the fostering didn't completely work out but that is good that they were able to get her through some of the really early stages of her life, what a doll
April 21, 200817 yr Author Most of her paralyses seemed to stem from starvation. She actually climbed onto my finger tonight, she wasn't really confident perched on my finger so I put my finger on my chest and she sat on my finger there until she was tired enough for bed. The parents raised her until almost when a budgie chick would leave. I guess they wanted to start another family as there was an egg in the box.
