been a while since I checked out this thread... how did you eventually figure out to fix that back bit in? Looking like a good set up... At the moment I'm spending every day off down at Bunnings and other hardware shopsthinking about how I am going to build some holding cages... I might be getting an aviary from a friend for free in a month or so... so fingers crossed....

I bought 4 small angle brackets and simply screwed it through the walls. One good thing about a metal aviary just drill and screw it.

The boys look like they are swimming in that cage!!! So much room for 2. It'll soon fill up though and I bet they're loving all the extra space!

Well wonce breeding season starts the aviary fills up quickly.

Hi

I really Like your set-up Derek ,just a quick question ? How do you keep the aviary clean inside ,do you hose it down or sweep it out .

Thanks

Hey Derek,

I'm just about to start renting too, so will need to have a floor similar to yours. Can I ask what you painted the floor with? I'll need to do the same to seal it etc... but was just worried about the safety of the birds if they try and eat it :(

Cheers, Maesie

Maesie, when I was renting at my old place we had square concrete pavers as the floor, very easy to keep clean. I also used to chuck a bucket of sand down everytime I cleaned the cage as it made it easir to sweep out at the next clean.

I used to have pavers on the bottom of my old avairy, but had big issues with ants climbing up and seed and poo going down the cracks. I wanted to avoid this if possible.

I used an exterior matt acrylic. Make sure it doesnt have an of those mould inhibitors in it.

Thanks!

I use High Gloss Exterior acrylic on my cages & aviaries & the birds chew it & I have never noticed any bad effects from it.

Just make sure that the agent knows what you are going to do. With mine I had to agree to replace the turf where the aviary is sitting whenever I leave.

Some agents/owners may not accept having an aviary in the yard. You don't want to move in put up the aviary and then have a bun fight with the agents and risk eviction.

Yep, thanks for that. I have spoken to the Agent (of the place I have applied for) and she said an Aviary wouldn't be an issue. Once I am in and settled, I'll measure up the backyard and figure out which way the weather comes etc... and then approach them with my ideas. I definately don't want to go to all that hastle to then have to pull it down.

If I don't happen to get this place, I'll be doing this with all the places I apply for. I don't see the point in lying... I'd rather be honest... as an aviary is not something you can hide when they come around for an inspection :( .

(P.S. Sorry for butting in on your thread)

You aren't butting in at all. All information is relevant for others in the same situation.

You might also want to check with the local council as to how many birds you can keep. Most of them have that info online and believe it or not, most are different.

:D ... I'll check out our local council as well. Better to be safe than sorry!
