Yay,

Yesterday I became a budgie grandma! :P One of my first batch of babies had a baby.

If you count the fact that I was a mummy to the budgie that had the first baby, I guess I could be considered a budgie great grandmummy, but that's not so exciting :D

This is the new Mummy, Midori, back when she was still in the nest herself...

zmidori.jpg

She has teamed up with one of my original Budgies, Beau, a skyblue spangle, who was fathering chicks of his own when Midori was in the nest.

They have been inseparable since Midori was about 4mths old, so they finally got their chance...

Elly,

that photo is of the new mummy when she was a baby last year. The new bub is still a pink Jellybean. I would be happy if she made some that looked like her though. :P

You've gotta get us pictures of the new babies as soon as they start showing their colours okay? :P We can be so demanding sometimes can't we :D

Midori is a stunning girl ...I am looking forward to your outstanding baby shots :D

PS egg three to Amira and George

PPS JUst got back from the photo shoot 4 hours, about 500 photos and 2 hrs in the dark photos :P

Congrats Grandma Budgie ! Will be looking forward to the hundreds pictures of the Grand budgelbubblettes !

( Budgelbubblettes <------ " noun " ? Verb ? Adjectively nounish ? ) My newest word for baby bald jellybean brain budgies )

NOTE : Not to be confused with Budgeables. Thats a whole different Budgie there !

Congratulations GRANNY…I remember Midori when she was a chickie…do you know if Beau is split for Opaline at all? Good luck.

Congratulations on being a budgie grandma!!!!!!!!! Can't wait to see what her babies turn out like!

Norm,

good question. I can't remember whether he had opaline chicks... will have to check my records. The only one of his 3 chicks I kept was my very first born, a YF normal skyblue.

2 chicks in the nest this morning.

I have a couple of eggs in the nest of Cammie, my TCB hen, paired with a lutino. I have also just thrown out the eggs from 3 failed nests, 2 of which were my BES hen and BES cock. Dissapointing, but I believe it would have been due to a very late hot spell we had here earlier this month. I wouldn't have sat around all day in a nest if I was a hen either.

Kaz, way to go, George and Amira!!

3 chickies in the nest!

Midori is turning out to be a very good mummy and Beau is being his usual great self, in and out of the nest helping Midori feed the chicks.

Norm, Beau IS split for opaline, so maybe we will get more chicks with the great opaline definition Midori has.

I have another baby that will hopefully be as gorgeous as Beau. He is in the nest of Dekota and Oh-Oh.

Lovely dark spangle markings !!

Yep Kaz,

I think he is going to be a very beautiful little boy! It's the first chick from this pair that hasn't been yellow face, so Jacquie and I were quite excited about it... once it feathered up further and I saw it was also a spangle I got even more excited

Remind me how this all works....does that mean he can be DF yellowface ? or just carry the YF gene ?

Hi Kaz,

no great mystery :) Only one of the parents is yellowface.

This is Mum(Dekota): YFII skyblue spangle

zDekota.jpg

This is Dad (Oh-Oh): Skyblue Dilute Opaline Spangle

zOh-oh-1.jpg

So the outcome for this pair includes the following:

50% SF Spangle

50% Yellow Face

100% split dilute

Normal split Opaline Cocks

Opaline Hens

(all skyblue chicks)

If it was YellowFace x YellowFace the chicks would be 25% Double Factor YF (which would be a white face), 50% YF and 25% normal (also white face). The only way to tell whether a whiteface was a double factor yellowface or just normal would be if, when breeding with a normal bird, a yellow face was produced.

In going back over my records I discovered I was wrong, their very first chick was a skyblue normal split dilute, split opaline cock!

Here he is:

I must learn to check my records before let my fingers type away :)

Unfortunately Dekota is a mum who stops sitting once a couple of chicks are hatched, so I must note down that I need to foster her remaining eggs at that stage. They are pet type budgies, but they make pretty offspring :)

Their last couple of rounds has only produced what one of my friend's calls "bubblegum babies", YFII skyblue spangle budgies.

This though will be their first skyblue spangle that isn't yellow-face.

This is Beau who is paired with the green opaline budgie (Midori) above

zBeau.jpg

I am hoping Dekota and Oh-Oh's baby is just as pretty as he is:) Beau and Midori have the 3 hatchlings I posted above.

and I needed to know so thankyou very much. here I am , breeding YF in the cabinets right now and still havent quite grasped the genetics :)

Funny thing with some YF chicks.....They have their YF show up at around the time of pin feathers and colouring up....then at fledging it disappears and they look like normals....two weeks later the YF comes through again. I am assuming it is what is referred to in Show breeding circles as Australian Yellowface which is paler ??

Hi Kaz,

I assume so, I have only ever had type II or golden face budgies.
