Posted March 25, 200817 yr This is the delayed chick that is 6 weeks old tomorrow. One of his feet is strange and he can't perch with this foot? I keep calling him a he but I think he may be a she? He's had enough and running away now...... This link started at http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....showtopic=18161
March 26, 200817 yr That foot definatly doesnt look good... Perhaps with time the tendons will ease up and he'll be able to perch semi-normally
March 26, 200817 yr i am not an expert but can he grasp at all with the foot he will probably be a special needs budgie you can start to do physical therapy with the toes by massaging them, putting your finger in his toes so he can learn to grasp better etc....
March 26, 200817 yr That foot thing is a common sign of rickets or lack of calcium as a baby. It does not usually get better but they can perch in their own special way.
March 26, 200817 yr Awww, what a cutie.. I'm thinking a he. I'm sure he'll find his own way of getting around and will prob lead a pretty happy life.
March 26, 200817 yr Author That foot thing is a common sign of rickets or lack of calcium as a baby. It does not usually get better but they can perch in their own special way. This is what I thought although I give calcivet in the water of the breeding cages and when the chick was younger I thought it was going to have splayed legs so I gave it a drop of calcivet in the mouth for a week. Having 2 of our boys with special needs it only seems natural to have a special needs budgies too
March 26, 200817 yr Denise I think that HE is beautiful ..... With the picture is that his Nail or a Bit of Poo on it ... Sometimes Babies need their feet clean too in the nest boxes Like Kaz said HE will find his own way to perch ......
March 26, 200817 yr My firewall is blocking the picture, is there anyway to post a link to the picture and then I may be able to see it. It could possibly be something that a splint will fix. Especially if he is still young. But I can't really say much until I see a picture.

March 28, 200817 yr Author My little Valentine has fledged today He looks so tiny sitting on the floor of the cage but he's eating the millet and the vegie mix, not flying yet.

March 31, 200817 yr Author Very sad and upset today. I went out to check the birds this morning and my special little Valentine had drowned in the water dish in the cage, he must have wandered in and his funny foot was caught on the side of the dish and he couldn't get out :angel1:
