Posted March 25, 200817 yr Hi everyone, I live west of Brisbane and am owned by 1 10 month old male budgie called Dude, who is a very cheeky character that is happy to be terrorised by my 5yr old daughter, (Laughing out loud), I also have 1 foxy (Tramp) and 2 horses (Happy & Bella). I have owned and bred budgies in the past but had been birdless for almost 8yrs when I bought Dude from a local breeder. Dude is a pretty little yellow faced blue (type 1 I think), he enjoys being out of his cage and is starting to talk, he loves playing with the bells that hang from his toys and pulling his ladder down every time I put it back up. I will post some photos of him soon. Dude's Mum.

March 27, 200817 yr Author Hi everyone that replied. Today we had a very near miss, my daughter decided to let Dude out of his cage while the dog was inside and due to having his wing clipped (because the kids frequently forget to close doors) Tramp got hold of him. I thought that I had already lost him as he was laying in my hands like a rag doll but then I felt his little heart pounding, so I gave him a quick search and wrapped him up and held him to keep him warm (I don't have a lamp), well after a couple of minutes he wants out of his nice warm nest so I did a more thorough search of him and couldn't find any broken skin or other injuries just a lot of lost feathers. Dude is now back in his cage and has been eating and drinking, at first he was very unbalanced on his perch but was determined to sit in his favourite spot, he can now jump from perch to perch without looking like he is going to fall and even had a little chatter when he heard some wild birds outside. I have his cage covered and have warned the kids not to make much noise in the room or their lives will be at risk. I will post updates tomorrow. This is a picture of Dude at about 3 - 4 months old taken with a flash. The other photo was taken at night with no flash and his real colour is some where between the two. He does have a small amount of colour on the top part of his wings where it should be white but the rest of his wings are black and white. Is he actually a y/f blue or violet ????
March 27, 200817 yr Oh no... I'm sorry about your near miss. Birds and Dogs/Cats never mix! Just watch him very closly. I don't mean to scare you but sometimes they can look okay and then suddenly go down hill very quickly when the shock sets in and/or other unseen injuries present themselves. Do you have a near by avian vet? Perhaps look one up just in case (for now and in the future). Good luck, I hope he is okay, and please keep us updated.
March 27, 200817 yr Maise is correct about a possible avian vet visit. Keep in him a warm spot, calm for a day or so, and watch for shock. It is hard to tell between the 2 pictures about the blue, I am going to assume violet because Merlin is one and that is what happens to the colors on him. With no flash it can make him look extremely violet and then with flash it makes him look more sky blue. The best way to capture the violet is to have him next to a window on a nice bright day and then take a picture without flash that is how I capture Merlin's colors.
March 27, 200817 yr Hi again, Given that it is usually really hard to see the violet colour of a bird in a photo, I would definitely say violet. He is a very beautiful boy. As for the fright with the dog, my heart leapt when I read it as I lost a budgie I had only had for one day when my son let a cat into the room where he was quarantined. The cat knocked over the cage, the door flew open and my son found him out that back in the cat's mouth, dead. He was completely unharmed, so I think the fall was what killed him, didn't make me feel any less sick in the stomach about it though. I am so glad that Dude seems to be okay. Feathers.
March 27, 200817 yr Author I have done a search for a vet and the closest one is 1 1/2 hours away, the rest are about 2 hours away. I will ring the Toowoomba one in the morning as they are the closest and see what advice they can give me. At the moment Dude is sitting quietly (his cage is still covered) but is alert and listening.
March 27, 200817 yr It would seem Dude has only had one wing clipped. He needs both wings clipped. Do you have anyone that can do the other wing for you ?
