March 25, 200817 yr Could someone please tell me how to get the air bubbles out of a handfed babies crop hes so full the poor little bugger! Massage the crop softly... they usually work their way out... Edited March 25, 200817 yr by maesie spelling
March 25, 200817 yr Another way I have seen is to "pop" the air bubble. Sterilise a sewing needle and gentle pass it through the wall of the crop and immediately withdraw the needle. This does not hurt the chick.
March 25, 200817 yr Author Thanks karen for the reply but i am too much of a sook i dont think i would be able to do that and not cry
March 26, 200817 yr The chicks life could depend on what you do. Have a look at this link (halfway down): http://www.cockatielcottage.net/march04.html Holes heal very quickly so you may even need to make a very small incision - the chick will thank you! Make sure the area you cut is sterile too. Edited March 26, 200817 yr by karen
March 26, 200817 yr Nice illistration on the link Karen. I have not come across this in my birds and am hoping not too.
March 26, 200817 yr Luckily I haven't although I know others that have and it is a stressful time for both breeder and chick. Many chicks die before help is sought. Another thing is also sour crop. If there is a yeast type smell coming from the chicks beak it must be taken to an avian vet (or bird experienced vet) for a crop wash and medication.
March 26, 200817 yr I had air before. Kaz told me how to do it. Sit the baby in one hand. using you thumb and index finger of the other hand, slowly squeeze the crop. Start below or jus ton the bottom of the air bubble and work you way up. the little chick should open its mouth as the air is forced out. Be careful as you do not want to force the food back up.
March 26, 200817 yr I would try what dave has suggested first and use the pin as a last resort. I would think that holes in tissues around fermenting food, would get infected easily.
