March 25, 200817 yr Thanks Guys, Thats comforting to know that he wont be contagious Besides he will be treated and over it in quarantine time :fear
March 25, 200817 yr I have this theory that the govt will bring in laws makeing breeders become regestered and you wont be able to buy a bird from a pet shop , you will go there and buy your cage and accessories get some breeders numbers and go a pick a bird direct from a regestered breeder , all birds will be rung with a breeders number and records kept of where each bird goes . Reasons being , a judge came out from germany and he said that he had to keep records of all his birds bred and records of the people he sold them to so if something happened The govt could trace where the birds came from . Im thinking bird flu and how the govt can trace or track if a problem arises, Its just my theory.

Whenever the Government gets involved with anything it means money we'd have to pay them. Licence fee, Registration fee, there would be some kind of insurance that you would have to pay in case there was a outbreak. The birds would have to pass government health checks more money, Sounds like a dooms day Serrano for the hobby. They are watching though, I saw a documentary on a bird expert in Australia. He had been studying birds in this country for over a decade. One of those weird bird watching type! The Government subsidized a very tiny amount for his work each year. Until one year he found that the subsidy had increased ten fold. The reason a park ranger had found a large number of birds that had died along a coastline (Can't remember which one ) they thought it was bird flu as these birds had migrated from Siberia!! they sent him to the area to investigate and found it wasn't flu but something else. It was enough to scare them and pay this guy a lot more to research what birds are migrating here and what are they carrying. By the end of the show he had gone from a beaten up old combi to a mercedes transport van. Cool!
March 26, 200817 yr I totally understand wanting to make all breeders registered... But like throwback said the government would use it to charge some fee's... I just think the people in charge of animal welfare have to grow some teeth...
March 26, 200817 yr Liv...If that Pied is the bird your taking about it has more than scaly mite it also has some beak problem. It must not be a young bird as that beak has grown & already been cut, I would suggest that it’s beak would be a continuing problem, it even could be beak & feather disease, something you certainly don’t want to bring home to your flock. I know many of you feel you need to help birds, but in my opinion bringing home sick or un normal birds is a problem, better stick with healthy ones, they will give you enough problems themselves.
March 26, 200817 yr Author I certainly don't want to bring home something that will infect my flock..... this is why i keep going around and around about this poor bird.... My heart wants to bring him home and take care of him.... My head keep telling me that he could create problems with my flock...
March 26, 200817 yr Author I had organized the scaly face meds he would need, and was planning to bring him home from the shop tomorrow...... but perhaps i won't now OHhhh, how hard it is to walk away on a living creature who needs help  Is there someone out there who would like to take care of him who doesn't have other birds to risk infecting??????? Edited March 26, 200817 yr by **Liv**
March 26, 200817 yr It may not be beak and feather, and could be just an over grown beak... perhaps take him to a vet, get a quick test and if it's clear for that bring him home, if not.... maybe euthinasia?
March 26, 200817 yr Ya can't save them all Liv... I know you want to but imagine the heartache you would feel if he infected your flock... chances are he would have to stay quarantined for the rest of his life... It is a very sad situation.
March 26, 200817 yr Also too, if you buy him you will only be encouraging the shop to sell more sick budgies. They will profit from not looking after their birds. Call the spca on them or threaten to do it Edited March 26, 200817 yr by Sailorwolf
March 26, 200817 yr Have you made a complaint yet? I agree with Sailor when you buy them sick you keep them in business I know it is not the best situation for the bird but for future sells it may or may not make the difference. I would simply not support shopping there anymore and would buy everything else somewhere else. I know eaisier said then done but I did that to a pet store and refuse to go in it now because of the very reason. Will I make a dent in their profit probably not but I know I am doing my part.
March 26, 200817 yr I don't know much about PBFD in budgies (only cockies at the moment) but wouldn't feather problems show up first and maybe other birds in that cage have some kind of sign as well? When we got Little back where I worked, we basically just took him with the reasoning that the pet store would be set back financially if it spread to the other birds. They made no attempt to stop us when we said that. (But we did have the authority of being an avian vet clinic). I agree, I would not give the pet store a single cent! If you do take him he would need to stay in quarantine for 30 days after signs disappear. He will need beak trimming for the rest of his life. Like all new birds you should get a full checkup with your vet. They should at least do a faecal smear and maybe a blood test. With Little we gave him a shot of broad spec antibiotics just in case he had something bacterial, and I guess because the scaly was so bad we assumed the beak problem was directly caused by it (I can't tell if that's the case from your pictures). But it is true he could have other problems as well that we can't see - that is why we quarantine. Another thing I know causes overgrown beak like that is liver disease, especially due to bad nutrition. Maybe you could find someone without birds who's willing to do what it takes to care for him? Or quarantine him far from your other birds and observe strict quarantine measures. There is still a risk - as there is for all new birds. It sounds like a lot of trouble for you Liv... health and money wise... I don't know what I'd do in your situation... Edited March 26, 200817 yr by Chrysocome
March 26, 200817 yr Author My head as won the battle with my heart. As hard as it is, i have decided to let the poor bird be. After talking with some vets and discovering a lack of Avian Vets in my area (non within an hours drive from me) i feel i need to make the tough decision and not risk my flock. I am also ill equip to suddenly deal with a bird of his condition, I don't know how to crop feed (although i want to learn), i am an organic breeder so i don't have any harsh medications on hand (except for wormer) and i would have to buy another cage as both my Quarantine cages are occupied. Scooter was an easy rescue as he has rickets and is not otherwise sick No, i can't save every poor little bird that comes into my life (as much as i want to), It is up to me to protect my flock from disease first. It has been a very tough decision to make I will post a topic in the budgies for sale section to see if there is any one who wants to look after this bird.... I am not good when it comes to confronting people on a complaining level. I will however, ring the R***A today and put this pet shop on their records (even if they don't do anything - it might bite the shop in the butt later down the track) Thank you for your time and advice - i can't stress how tough this has been, and how much i appreciate your help. I will let you know how i go with the R***A
March 28, 200817 yr No matter which way you went, there will be good coming out of it, so good on you for looking after this little guy even from afar.
March 28, 200817 yr I can understand how difficult this was for you, everyday I want to take on more fosters but have to stop myself and an ill bird creates even more difficulties.
March 28, 200817 yr Author Thanks for all your kind words and hugs... I called the R***A yesterday morning and they said they were going to take a look at the bird and the condition of the other birds in the shop. I really hope they will do what is best for the poor little guy. I will give them a call on Monday to see if they have any feedback for me
April 7, 200817 yr Author Time for an update - I rang the R***A back last week to get some feedback on my complaint - they said that it had been acted upon but are not allowed to tell me any details (including the status of the sick bird :hap: ) Anyway with all the negative things i hear about the R***A i just expected that they were telling me what I wanted to hear. Anyways... GOOD News!!! I went into that shop again today and it has been completely cleaned up. Cages have been freshly cleaned and are actually spotless - Birds have been moved around into better (bigger) cages and everything is looking great :hap: - The sick bird was gone too - hopefully getting the treatment it needs. It seems the R***A here in SA are true to their word :hap:
