Another Petshop Heartbreak :(

Featured Replies

Posted

I went into a pet supply shop today and they had an adult budgie in a cage with about 6 babies. The babies were fine (for now) but the adult who is a pretty sky blue recessive pied has REALLY BAD scaly face...... to the point that his beek is VERY long and deformed. i can see the mites starting on his eyes toooooooo :D

I just wanted to bring him home and fix him up...... He is basically rotting in that shop :)

He is still at that shop at the moment as i want to see if there is any one who can help me treat him, or has any advice... I have emergancy vet money that i keep for my birds.... but i am worried about using that money for him becuase if any of my birds then need a vet in the next month or so i wont have the vet money any more - I put my flock first - but i also want to help this poor suffering bird :(

What do i doooooo????? I am heart broken :(

you can write a letter to the manager informing him of the situation, if you find they don't respond you can report the store, there was a large pet store by us and I e-mailed everyone on the website the issue, it was the same thing scaley face when I went back the issue was resolved.

Go back to the pet store and tell them the bird has advanced scaly face and it needs urgent treatment......dont tell them its easily fixed. Vet costs and segregation from others may not be what they want to bear the cost of. Tell them you are willing to adopt the bird for free and pay for its ongoing treatment. If they give you the bird...you bring him home and treat with spot on ivermectin and he is fixed in a fortnight.

Too easy.

PS take some printouts of scaly face with you to show how the disease progresses. ( our FAQ section )

This is Chrysocome's "Student Budgie"

It's about the same condition as her but...His beak is quite a bit longer :D ....

Woudn't it need vet attention???

If the beak has become misshapen...then YES...it needs vet treatment.

:D thats what i thought

if i spend the money on his vet bills then i may not be able to afford (possible) bills for my birds ......

His beak is long and thick.... Do you think i would be able to carefully file it myself??? Or Do you think a vet would help me with discount treatment????

I have just done a ring around of vets and they have all said there is not much that can be done for him

They said that He will need constant medical care, repeat beak trimmings. Also he probably has a number of deficencies, and possibly and underlying desease too

A treatment of castor oil a few months ago and he would have been fine :D

:D Whenever I am in a pet store I make a point of checking out food/water/cage conditions and complain and I know I am not the only one that does this. Haven't seen birds that are obviously sick or scaly face but sometimes the lighting is so bad................

This is so terrible :D

How does the RSPCA come in to play in a situation like this? Do they have any jurisdiction with pet stores? I would be tempted to call them.

Poor little budgie... You would think that the pet shop has some responsibility to do something about his condition...

But then again they wouldn't care they are just about profit.. :D

I have heard that the RSPCA don't do much about these "small" cases... they just prefer the big media grabbing ones. There is a vet just across the road from the shop.... i gave them and call and they said they don't deal with birds.

It's a big shame... and he is with 6 babies that he is probably going to infect too.

I still want to do something for this poor bird... is there ANYTING i can do that won't financially cripple me?????

Will his beak continue to grow even if the mites are cleared up? He seems to be able to eat on his own...

Do you think if you bring the seriousness of it to the attention of the storeperson/hopefully they would take the bird to a vet - wouldn't it just be a tax deduction for a pet store anyway?

And maybe tell a few white lies, that the babies will become infected within a couple of weeks if they don't seek treatment (which they may well, but may not show signs before they are purchased). All they will care about is losing a profit of the babies!

Just a thought anyway :D

Petshops...no matter what they say...do not take a bird they paid $5 for to the vet

I agree... we brang a bird home from a pet shop who couldnt fly (which we didn't find out until it got home) we rang them up and they said we could have an exchange... bob said okay, took the bird back and said what's going to happen to it...? they said they'd take it to the "vet" and it would probably be put down... So we kept her instead :D

That is so horrible!!

isn't there at least ONE petshop that actually CARES for their animals and not just the money involed an animals life is worth more than a sale!

Neglect and Animal crulety!

poor poor darling !!

complain to the council the RSPCA anyone who will listen the poor creature doesn't deserve to be treated like a peice of rubbish! :D :yelling: I WOULD YELL AT THEM

Having been through the complain to the R***A ( insert spc )

stage in worse cases than this one...I have found them to be a toothless tiger. Very little if anything is done. They make excusues not to go out and look by saying the bird might be sold by the time they get there. I have found some tragic cases and complained to the R***A to find the bird still there weeks later and in the same condition.

The world is not a fair one....Just because these authorities are meant to fix things and sort out abuses of the system does not mean they actually do what is needed.

I have known petshop owners...those that start out caring usually end up just seeing the dollar signs from what money they can make of animals and birds and gullible people or people who buy on impulse with a credit card. :rip:

Unfortunately the pet shops aren't there for the animals!

Only for the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Just making a note that this petshop is NOT my local one that i think is good... That shop is still GREAT and thats where i am getting Scooters new cage from :fear

This is another shop that i have only visited twice and i may only go back there one more time...

Hubby is not keen on me brining home this bird. He is concerned about the intrduction of the mites that could posibbly infect my flock - i have to agree there... what are the risks?????

I have to disagree with a lot of schools of thought where people think of scaly face as highly contagious. I treat as I find it. I treat incoming birds. I have yet to have it rage through hundreds of birds just because one has it. I had parents once who developed scaly in the middle of feeding new babies...the babies didnt get it and indeed one of the babies that I still have now and she is 3 yrs old...she only got scaly face a year ago at age 2.

Scaly face can be carried with all the birds for any length of time and just comes out under stress...much like a cold sore in people.

The risks of him infecting your birds is nil(basically) if he's kept quarantined and treated :)
