March 24, 200817 yr Author Thanks Lone ...... I have a shed /garage But TOOOOOOO Dark and far away from the house plus the Rats ans Foxes and etc .... I was thinking about buying cabinets and stacking them in an aviary but can i put it outside or are they best off say in a room somewhere .....
March 24, 200817 yr Hi Neat, I currently have my cabinets in an aviary outside. Works well as they can still see and hear the aviary birds which keeps them stimulated. Feathers.

I was thinking about buying cabinets and stacking them in an aviary but can i put it outside or are they best off say in a room somewhere ..... Mine are up the back , on the right of the picture are my flights , there are three flights , so outside wont matter, the main thing is if one gets out and the cages are inside another cage you wont loose your birds . the other day I had a rat in the breeding room it was as big as my foot , I looked at it and it looked at me and we went in different directions, I have rat bait in the breeding room under the cabinets and this usually controls any vermin that comes along.
March 24, 200817 yr this was a really good thread idea neat.. it also seems to be getting lots of pictures which I love... Throwback and lone budgie... what made you choose the types of breeding boxes that you did? (inside/outside the cage)...
March 24, 200817 yr Well, I haven't done it yet, but I'm going to stack them on one side of the aviary.
March 24, 200817 yr the main thing is if one gets out and the cages are inside another cage you wont loose your birds This is a really good point. I had one bird that escaped her cabinet three times. Had the cabinets not been in an enclosed space I might have lost her. Feathers.

Throwback and lone budgie... what made you choose the types of breeding boxes that you did? (inside/outside the cage)... If you look closely I do have some draw type ones up the end as does lonebudgie. The outside box setup is one I have always wanted to try. It is similar to ones you see in Europe. I have used the draw type before on real problem. To be honest the type of setup is just a personal choose. Budgies will breed in a shoe box if you throw that in. It's really up to the birds! Although in the past I have had certain boxes more successful than others. Maybe ones with a better view! :(Laughing out loud):
March 24, 200817 yr This is a picture of some of the type cabinets I use, mostly I put the nest box inside, but I have some with the nest as a draw, which is good as with the external ones there is easier access to the young. Definitely have your cabinets in some enclosed area to avoid escapes, as sometime birds learn how to get out & it will also prevent attacks from things like rats, hawks & cats etc. It should in the Australian climate have good ventilation, as outside is healthiest & a completey closed room isn't that healthy for them. Also as others have said elsewhere if you put them in an aviary don’t have other birds flying in the aviary outside the boxes, as that will interfere with the breeders & you wont have much success. March 24, 200817 yr I have my breeding pairs in wire cages with the nest box attached to the outside. I find this easier to clean. They are positioned currently in my store room until I build my new avairy which will incorporate an indoor breeding room and one flight. I currently have 6 breeding cages and my another six when I start/complete the avairy some time in the next couple of months.
March 24, 200817 yr Author Well at least I am on the right track??? Now the reason for this post was I noticed that at my old house the Aviary was Outside undercover and they breed like MAD .... Since I have moved They are in Like a QLD room soo to speak it is fully screened with Fly screen so Ventilated well and we are always in there Could the kids be disturbing them ???? there is also a Fluro light in this room another breeder told me to change to a uv light??? But I thought that was a bit strange .... I am thinking about re locating the aviary near the other one Outside .....I haven't had the pleasure of many eggs ..... But once the 2 fledge I will do the cabinet thing and how well that goes for me ???
March 25, 200817 yr this was a really good thread idea neat.. it also seems to be getting lots of pictures which I love... Throwback and lone budgie... what made you choose the types of breeding boxes that you did? (inside/outside the cage)... I have used both inside and outside , both ways still had the same result in terms of breeding. The reasons for why I use internal is , looks it always seems sleek and clean , You can see your birds from anywhere in the avairy they cannot hide behind the box so you can check them at a glance and see whats going on . I like big boxes , Big birds =big boxes = more room for the growing chicks . I also have a removable base in the box that is thrown out after each season and replaced with a new one , a hygene thing. I also like the fact as the chicks are nearing leaving the box there is room for the hen to start laying again. The only sacrafic I made with the internal box is I only use one perch , I believe the hen cannot get away from the cock and my birds are only in the cabinet for one thing and thats breeding , if they dont go down then its back to the avairy. I find the cocks flap their wings when holding onto the perch and sometimes hover in the one spot , as long as they can streach out im happy.
