Budgie Poop...

Featured Replies

The heatwave has finally broken today!! We had our first day under 40*C in 3 weeks and it was a lovely mild day of 31*C B) . Becase of the rageing heat (that makes me want to faint when out in it for more than 10 minuites), i have not done my weekly routine clean out of my aviary during that time - bad me :(

Anyways, i got stuck into it today and it was a mess... because i misted the budgies daily the spilt seed and poop on the floor had caked together to make a hard cement like layer over the pavers (YUK :P: )

I was on my hands and knees scraping it off with a spatular(DOUBLE YUK :P: ).... i really dislike budgie mess (love everything else about them though :)) - it's lovely and clean again now - phew ^_^

okay, I'm getting to the point hehe.... I was thinking, is budgie poop any good composted down and used as fertaliser in the garden???

Most likely....the only thing to worry about is seed germinating I suppose.

Forget the spatula....use an old fashioned garden hoe bent slightly to make the scraping easier.....long handle....no yukky stuff. ^_^

sounds like you learnt from experience....

I'm not too sure but l know what you mean about how you really have to scrub it off...

l clean mine every weekend without fail and yet some of it is so hard to get off, l have to scratch it off with my fingernails ^_^:

I had the same seed concern too...My hubby seems to think that if i put it in one of thoes compost bins that it will kill any seeds :P

Why didn't i think of a spade - Dah! *bangs head on desk* - it's just like me to do things the hard way ^_^

I was using a broom and I brought out the high pressure hose after i had cleaned all the muck to get the last bits off....

I use one of the builders scrapers. its got a long handle and a flat blade , you can get them from bunnings , then I vacumn it all up clean as a whistle.

The hose just moves the stuff around.... hmmm... how to use a vacumn without freaking out the birds...????

unfortunately with the composting, it will not kill all seeds. l learned this the hard way.

2 years ago l heard that sheep manure was an excellent compost to use, so off l went and l got a whole bunch of sheep manure for my garden. everything was growing very nicely, until l started to noticed l was getting a ton of weeds in my garden. so l had a whole garden full of daisy's. l spent weeks weeding them out. needless to say that was the last time l would use manure. instead l now use worm gold ( worm poop  ) as my compost and it hasn't given me any trouble like the sheep did.

Composting doesn't kill the seeds germinating. I have a pet pigeon & my budgies mess too ... so I dumped it all in the composter & used the soil in potted plants & the flower beds last season. I ended up with a nice crop of millet, corn on the cob & sunflowers. It made the raccoons & the wild birds awfully happy. I just left it all for them to scavenge on their own.
