Posted March 17, 200817 yr Hi everyone, just thought I'd post some new photos of Billie and Oscar's baby. We've named her Millie. She's out of the box now and exploring her bigger world. And she's as cute as and as pretty as a picture. We didn't expect her to be such a pretty colour. It was a nice surprise. When can I remove her from her parents as my daughter would like to have her inside and hand tame her? Thanks
March 17, 200817 yr Very pretty little BOY :hap: YF skyblue greywing spangle You can remove him when you are sure he is eating for himself :hap: Edited March 17, 200817 yr by KAZ
March 17, 200817 yr Author Hi Kaz, is baby a boy then? When I posted photos when she/he was younger I was told hen. In your last post you say boy...but you refer to her when you tell me about taking her away from her parents. Does that mean you're unsure? Don't want to sound rude, just don't want to call a boy a girl's name and vice versa. Ha ha ha Thanks :hap:

March 17, 200817 yr Hi Derricka, from the photos above your baby definitely looks like a male. The older they get the easier it is to sex them. Maybe Millie should be renamed Miles? :hap: Can you get some close-ups of the cere in natural light (no flash) as then we can be certain. How old is he? They are normally ready to be removed at 6 - 7 weeks of age. As Kaz said, as long as he can crack the seed for himself and is eating normally he can be removed. The earlier your daughter starts working with him the better. Even if he hasn't left the nest yet you or your daughter could sit and play with him for 15-20 mins at a time, several times a day. Just make sure you are in a budgie safe place and he cannot escape. You just never know when he is going to REALLY test those little wings out! Hope this helps, Feathers.
March 17, 200817 yr Author hi, hope these photos are okay. I think he must be close to being 6 weeks. I'll just watch him for the next couple of days and then I'll move him into another cage for my daughter. Thanks for all the info, i do appreciate it.
March 17, 200817 yr 100% boy from me too. You might have received mixed answers before as when they're young it can be hard to tell... unless you're an experienced breeder. He's very cute and I'm sure your daughter will love taming him and teaching him to talk. Enjoy
March 17, 200817 yr Call him MILBURN ... He's a gorgeous bird. Don't give him to your daughter. Give him to me. In fact. SELL Milburn to me. I will pay top dollar. Name your Price. No amount of money is too little to pay for such an excellent specimen of a parakeet ! You'll take a cheque right ?
March 18, 200817 yr very cute boy. (at least for the next little while then maybe I'll say girl ) I have no idea... I'm just following the pack.

March 19, 200817 yr Author Hi nicknack, is that cheque made up of doughnuts...ha ha ha!! And I'm pretty sure I'd have a fight on my hands if I tried to take him away from my daughter. And yes I think he's a pretty boy too. And his name is Oliver (Ollie for short). I've just removed him from his parents as his mother was being quite rough with him. I don't know if this is normal or not but I didn't like it so now he's inside with us.

March 20, 200817 yr Gee's ... I almost had me a new budgie there ... But ... I'm glad Ollie is in the house with your daughter. I'm sure he will make a lovely pet to her & give you all lots of love & laughter ! Even if I could have given you a life times worth of donuts ! Your loss ! More for me.
March 29, 200817 yr Author hello everyone, just wanted to tell you that Oliver nearly died. We rushed him to the vet when he collapsed on Wednesday morning. He was slowly starving to death. We thought he was eating as he always seemed to be, but actually wasn't and we couldn't tell the difference. He'd lost all his weight. The vet told me it's quite a common problem when babies are taken away from their parents too early. But I thought I was doing the right thing when his mother started to beat him up. And on a bright note we picked him back up today from the vets and he's doing beautifully. We're watching him carefully now that we know what to look for. It was so scary...poor little man! :hap: I'm so glad I've got my little mate back home as he has such a gorgeous personality.
March 29, 200817 yr How scary for you !! As time goes along and experience will tell you, you will look for the budgies bottom as a sign of good health, you will feel his keelbone for signs of weight loss etc etc. BUT in saying that, so very, very glad it wasnt too late for Oliver this time. Best of luck in his recovery....any worries...jump on here and ask or PM me for any extra info I can help you with :hap:
March 29, 200817 yr Poor Oliver. It must have been horrible for you. I'm glad he is okay and hope he continues to improve.
March 29, 200817 yr Being a good budgie "mom" you observe your babies and took the signs and went immediately the to vet kudos and hats off to you... I am glad Oliver is okay and continue on his road to recovery.
March 29, 200817 yr glad to her that oliver is okay, you are a very good budgie mommie Edited April 1, 200817 yr by birdluv
April 3, 200817 yr Author Thanks everyone. He's recovering perfectly! Eating like a herd of horses (gaining all the weight he lost I'm sure!) He's back to his old happy self! He can't stop chirping away at us and telling big stories about his ordeal (I'm pretty sure that's what all the noise is about). Ha ha ha I think he gets a kick out of sucking all the sympathy he can out of us. He's lucky I'm still feeling guilty about what happened. Ha ha ha! Anyway thanks again!
April 3, 200817 yr He is looking as cute as ever isn't he. Good to see that he is back in high spirits...
