:D

Just one question, l read last year somewhere to be careful with toys that have the above rope, because they can chew it off and swallow it or something?

Edited by KAZ

A couple of years ago, one of my budgies died from swallowing rope, but I don´t think it´ll matter, just as long as you keep an eye on the toy and make sure it isn´t fraying. Cute piccies, by the way! :rip:

Cute pics!!!!!!Thanks for sharing!

The warning for rope toys is not so much for swallowing and choking, although that is still a worry... But more for birds getting caught, hurting themselves and sometimes even dying.

I've had one boy in the aviary get caught in a peice of thread that was used to hang a millet treat from. He nearly lost a foot... i don't even want to think about how long he was hanging there before we found him :S

Since then I watch like a hawk when rope of any kind is in there :rip:

Nice pics :)

Libby - ah okay, l see now :rip: Is the length of the rope hanging from the circle of rope too long for them to get caught up in? I can trim it down so its not as long?

That's all up to you... I have the same swing and haven't found a need to trim it yet... but it alld epends on how you feel your birds work around it :rip:

If there's any cause for concern of them getting stuck, trim it :)

With a lot of stuff you put in their cage they can choke on it, if you put a branch in there they can choke on the bark they strip or a preening toy so I think it really is a matter of choice. I have a rope perch with Merlin and it is wound tight so there is not problems. If you want you could cut off the frayed ends and just leave the circle part.

Great pictures they look like they were having a blast.

Excellent pics Missy ... the gang look like they have a great time.

As for the rope perch there are usually instructions on them when you buy them that say if you see the rope begin to fray ... replace it with a new one ASAP. Yes ... you can trim the threads down if you think the birds are chewing it. I've used them for a long time & luckily have had no problems.

Funny ... I see my birds on the rope perches more ... it must feel nice on their feet ! The difference of bark on branches & wood perches we make & buy. Is a nice change for them.

Thanks guys

They are pretty much always like that, constantly having fun ;)

As for the instructions Nick Nack, there weren't any on the tag, it was an oval shaped tag with the name of the company (no contact details) and the other side was black except for the price ($4!)

They are chewing on the ends of the frayed bits, but l think thats part of the novelty? I might trim them down as l could see how they could get their foot caught up in one stray bit. Fizzy was sitting on the rope and a stray bit has come up and over the circle part, and his foot was standing on it.

$4, wow that is a great deal. over here they are $17 and up. wish l could find them here like that.

You took the quote right outta my mouth Birdluv ... those things are really expensive here ... the ones I bought are well over $10.

Until I found the same things at the Dollar Stores. They sell them for your dog & they are the same thing without the dangly bits ... All you have to do is add a hook or tie to

make it the way you like for your bird cage to make it hang properly.

The ropes with the plastic screw pieces on the ends for perches are well over $15.00 here in some of the pet stores.

HIGHWAY BIRD ROBBERY.

I have had two budgies hang themselves in a toy like that one with the fringe....They go through the fringe, get caught and then flap their wings to free themselves and twist and turn and the fibres of the fringe wrap tight around their neck. Even when we found one in time, we had to hold it steady and try and cut the fringe away from its neck but it died in our hands as we were doing it :o Cutting it to about 1 to 2 inches would avoid all this

hey that is a great idea, next time l go to the dollar store l'll see if they have some.

Hi Missy,

Fantastic picture, Missy, and great commentary. You've really shown their character.

I have the same type of ring toys, and others, with long fringes hanging off them. I trimmed all of mine down after one of my birds got caught up in it. I only noticed as he was in the same position two days in a row. Thank goodness I did as he didn't give me any indication that he was in any kind of stress. During that time other budgies must have been feeding him, again, thank goodness.

Anyway, since then I always trim off those fringes. I also use skipping ropes and $2.00 dogs toys a lot.

Thanks everyone :P

These photos were actually taken with my mobile phone! ^_^

P.S. since getting this new toy, Fizzy has now changed his sleeping position - he used to sleep hanging on to the side of the cage near Sherbet, who would sit on the swing.

Now he is sleeping on top of this new rope toy, on the top of the circle on an angle - silly bugger, why don't you just sit on it like a normal bird :P
