Hello everyone just wanted to introduce myself and my budgie and say what a great forum this is! I bought Tizzy my budgie a few days ago, she is the first bird I’ve owned so it’s all very new to me. I got her from a pet shop where she was advertised as a baby. I don’t really trust the pet shop but I still think she is quiet young as she doesn’t have a white ring around her eye, I’m also not a hundred percent sure on her sex?

I’ve read some sections of the FAQ, great information, but still have a couple of questions. She is really skinny and her breast bone is quiet obvious. Apart from that she seems healthy to me (a clean bum and is very active). What’s the best way to put some more condition on her? She hasn’t been wormed yet, I’m feeding her mixed seed from the pet shop and trying her with different fruit, vegies and eucalyptus leaves none of which she has touched yet. I’m no sure what else I can do but am worried about how skinny she seems.

Her nails are also very long do I need to worry about trimming them at all? There are a few natural branches in her cage, will that help to keep her nails short?

I think that’s all for now, I’ll try and take some pictures of Tizzy so I can show her off

Thanks :D

Welcome to the board... Everyone here is awesome and they help so much... But I'm not an expert so I'll leave the experts to answer.

Hi Jen,

Welcome to you and your budgie :D

You are in the right place to find all your answers.

Is it possible for you to post a picture??? A picture will help us greatly with telling you the age, gender and condition your new budgie is in.

Welcome to the forums :D. Pictures would help on determining the gender and if you want you can post a pics of her toenails. Budgie toenails are long anyways so they may look long but really are not. If you know how to cut dog/cat toe nails you could do budgie nails but make sure you have something around to stop the bled if you accidently nick the toenail. It is also a 2 person job one person hold the budgie in a towel wrapped and the other one cuts. With Merlin I just do the edge of the point very little and I don't do it often.

Welcome Jen ... always nice to see a new bird lover/owner join the forum. Always nice to hear someone has just gotten a NEW budgie friend & is going to engage themselves in a wonderful new experience with these amazing little birds. There is tons of information you can learn here as you go. I'm sure you will be happy with us all.

But firstly & most importantly you must know that as an new member to the BBC Inc. You have to bake a cake & invite me over to consume it. I will be looking forward to this. Don't overdo it ... Nothing special. Just a lovely little Black Forest Cake will do.

WELCOME again ! :D <----- mmmmm Cake !

Oh my gosh!!

Nick Nack.. get back in your box!!

Hi Jen,

Firstly, it is perfectly acceptable to just string Nick Nack along and not really make him a cake. We all do it! :D

Welcome to the BBC forum. We'd love for you to be ale to show off Tizzy, so feel free to add as many photos as you like.

I'd be a bit concerned about Tizzy with such a protruding breast bone. She may have been put into the shop too young and isn't eating properly. Do you know if she is cracking seed and actually eating it... or does it just look like she is playing? Perhaps you can try some soft food, like soaked bread or an egg food mxture. Even a commercially available 'egg and biscuit' mix could be good. Some little ones can get a bit depressed when they are taken from their parents too early and stop eating. So rather than be worried about what she is and isn't eating just yet just make sure she is actually eating.

We can help with age and sex from photos, but try to get a good clear shot of the cere (nose) for us to sex her.

Welcome aboard.

Feathers.

Hi Jen,

there's a few of us here who live in Perth too, so we are the W.A. chapter of Budgie Breeders Club. Good to have you here, and also good to see you are in tune with your budgie enough to have checked out the weight issue. Posting a picture will help us to help you. Be aware that Feathers and Libby. Little one and I are all in Perth and happy to advise and help if more than a photo posted is needed. If you need an experienced eye to check over Tizzy for you we can organise that too.

Keep talking on here, keep posting piks and chat......and WELCOME :D

Hi Jen and Tizzy and welcome. The above pointers are awsome. Along with Tizzy's photo's, a picture of his/her cage would be great too! You are very lucky to live in WA... Kaz and Co will look after you  Keep offering veggies etc... mine LOVE corn and carrot. He/she will try them eventually... but work out the weight issue too. Good luck and please keep us updated!!!

:D Hello Jen, love the name Tizzy, you will find many excellent tips here, and when it's time to post a picture, click on my signature for allowable sizes. :D

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome! Its great to see other Perth people on her as well, *libby* im north of the river in the carine area. (Laughing out loud) NickNack I'll get right onto that cake for you then!

She does seem to be eating, when I change her seed in the morning there are husks left behind but I will try her on some soaked bread as well.

okay I have managed to take some pictures of Tizzy, hopefully I've done this right...

She doesn't look as skinny (or maybe I'm just worrying over nothing? :D ) and her cere is more of a pinkish colour then whats showing up in the photos

She looks like a lovely young hen. To me she looks quite a normal weight and her feathers look nice and healthy :D

I agree with **Liv** :D. She's a very cute bird.

She looks fine in your photos... but keep watching her if your still concerned. She's very sweet :D

:D Tizzy LOVES the camera!!! Mine run /flyfor their cages t hide in! :D

Tizzy is beautiful :) . But in the first picture it looks like a boy to me. But maybe it's just my screen :P

she is very well balanced... How do you get her to stand so still SIDEWAYS!!! I gotta teach my budgies to do that when I get one :P just kidding. Great pics and great Budgie!

How do you get her to stand so still SIDEWAYS!!!

Gee's Jimmy ... dontcha know that all boids stand sideways like that when they just finished eating upside down cake ?

Tizzy's a beauty for sure Jen. Love the cheek patches matching her cere. She certainly looks well fed. You shouldn't worry too much about her not eating. She is prolly just adjusting to her new home. When I first got a young budgie on my own I didn't think he was drinking & couldn't find his water dish. I was feeding him water with a straw. He musta thought I was nuts & he soon had me wrapped around his little budgie fingers !

We can sure worry or panic & go to some strange lengths to make sure our new birds are getting the best care ! Don't fret. Your Tizzy looks lovely & healthy.

I'm looking forward to that cake too !
