any news kaz?? :) looking forward to seeing these chicks.

I was right...the first chick has arrived. BUT neither parent had fed it,...it was cold and weak when I found it and no food in its crop. I have fed it and put it in a foster nest.

Oh :) How disappointing the parents arent looking after it. Lucky you have been able to feed and foster :o Cant wait to see how it grows up!

awww... hope the foster parents look after it. Have you bred with Amira before? if so did she neglect the chicks? I've been sick the last couple of days and have been reading budgie books in bed, a couple of the books suggested putting that info down on breeding cards... do you do that?

Havent bred with Amira before...she is a hen of Feathers and we are breeding our birds together...so no history. I will watch her carefully and see if she figures it out along the way. If not her chicks will be fostered.

I cupped baby in my hands when I found it cold and still, and warmed it from my breath, fed it a sloppy mix of handrearing formula off a spoon...they sense it and suck it in. Just checked and it has a bubble of food in its crop and is warm and lively. Fingers crossed.

That's the first EXTREME CLOSEUP I've ever seen of a wee bub. EWWWW .... it looks like an alien. But I could love it. Good luck Kaz. If anyone can make this little alien survive .... YOU CAN DO IT !

I hope they manage to look after the others when they arrive, and good luck with this little one!

I will watch closely to be sure....it may be due to arriving in the dark. Any hatched through the day may stand a better chance of being noticed and fed.

Just checked the baby in its foster nest........has a full crop and warm with foster mum and three slightly older foster siblings :(

The second chick has arrived ( 3 eggs to go ) and Amira has fed it...not a lot, but she HAS fed it. I will check again before night time and see that it has more food and is a bit livelier. I will give her a chance to learn how to be a mum. If she gets it right I will put her first chick back in there in a day or two. The first chick is doing fine in the foster nest. I will take some piks through the weekend.

Fingers crossed, look forward to pics when you have a chance :(

I checked the baby tonight and it has been fed some more. Looks happy and well. Amira is attending to it and George filled up on some soft food and has been going in and feeding his baby too. Amira QUACKS at him :(

Ah ... true LOVE PREVAILS ... Mom & Pop are doing their thing & Mom is telling her man what to do & how to do it. Ain't being Married truly magical ? Good to hear things are working better with chicky #2.

I fostered out the second chick just now too. Amira just isnt "getting it" and George has been trying to feed the baby but fillings its crop with air earlier in the day...some food, but mostly air. I just checked again and at a time when the baby should be fed...it had nothing in its crop and it was losing body temperature. So it has gone into the nest of Swift and Radar who have one INO chick in there nest and no others. Experienced parents...fingers crossed they can bring it back from the brink.

Sorry to hear that Amira and George cannot work out how to be parents, hope the chick makes it with the foster parents.

Well...the foster Mum also failed to feed this little one and it was fading fast. I just fed it myself, whereupon it became much more lively. I found it a new foster mum and put it in there for the night to keep warm. Will check again in the morning.

Good reasons to have a few pairs breeding at the same time. I have about 30 pairs breeding right now, so I had some choices of fosters.
