Posted February 26, 200817 yr i just had my first experience of a dodgy bird breeder. i went to the place that advertises as a bird shop and it was a caravan full of bird cages with all these different types of birds shoved in these little cages and i was not going to buy anything but this pretty pied caught my eye. the guy told me she was 18 months old and a recessive pied but know i have her home i think she is younger than 18 months because she still has faint bars on her head and i am still trying to work out the difference between dominant and recessive pieds but i think she is dominant not recessive. can anyone tell me what they think. i still think she is beautiful but would like to know her age and type because i bought her for breeding.the guy i bought her from from said he did not know much about types of budgies, a bird is a bird to him and he only breed for money.i have just put her in a cage and have wormed her and my husband does not like her because when he picked her up to put her in her cage she bit him and we have some that bite but not hard like she did.she does not have a name yet, my husband wants to call her Helga.when i was looking at her i noticed she had no iris rings so i assumed that meant she is recessive pied so is that correct Edited February 26, 200817 yr by deb
February 26, 200817 yr She's a cute little skyblue recessive pied and HELGA is a great name for her Hard to tell her age. Did you ask if he had bred with her and how recently ? She may be due for a long rest. Sounds like he was a bird mill operation and Helga may be "tired".
February 26, 200817 yr Her cere seems to be around the 6 month mark if she is that young, I would say recessive pied but watch out for those iris rings and I say that because she has some blue up and around her neck which is not common in the recessive pieds, she does have more of the orange beak like the recessives too. If you could get a front view of her head and show the bar lines you are talking about more that would be helpful.

Sounds like he was a bird mill operation and Helga may be "tired". he bought Helga from a breeder and he said she has not bred yet but she is ready because her cere is dark brown. he said he starts breeding when they are 6 months old, i felt like slapping him but thought better not.it is hard to get a photo of her because she gets very flighty when i go near her cage.
February 26, 200817 yr A lot of my recessive pieds have colour up around their neck. This one of yours is recessive pied also known as Danish Pied and I would not believe a word that man told you based on what you found and experienced there. Edited February 26, 200817 yr by KAZ
February 26, 200817 yr Author Boris will be very happy she is a recessive pied but he will have to wait a while before he meets her.
February 26, 200817 yr I agree she is a recesive pied. I would rest her before putting her down with Boris. It's hard to tell her age but she is definately over 6 months old. I have 6 month old hens whose cere is that colour but definately not ready for breeding.
February 26, 200817 yr Author she is in quarantine and because of where i bought her she will stay there for a couple of months just to make sure she is very healthy before i put her in the aviary.
February 26, 200817 yr She is very pretty I hope she stays well. The place she came from sounds horrible do you think it is a case for the RSPCA?????
February 26, 200817 yr Author She is very pretty I hope she stays well. The place she came from sounds horrible do you think it is a case for the RSPCA????? i thought about it but i have seen pet shops with lots of birds shoved in small cages and it seems the rspca does not do anything about them. All the birds had food and water and i did not see any sick birds just overcrowded cages.
February 26, 200817 yr In my efforts to try and do something for birds in bad conditions, I have found the **** to be a toothless tiger. They only seem to respond to the extreme cases and then slowly. They also end up sympathising with and excusing the offenders even before they get to go on a visit. My experiences only here
February 26, 200817 yr She is lovely. Ive found the RSPCA tend to flock to 'high publicity' cases not the smaller, lesser ones or on the other extreme they'll visit someone over a neighbour complaint for no reason as one of our members found.
February 26, 200817 yr She is very cute! Hello Helga I'd also say quite young... A long quarintine sounds good, just to be on the safe side. What a horrible person you bought her off. Those poor birds! I'm glad none of them are sick (YET!)
February 26, 200817 yr She is very pretty The place you bought her from sounds horrible, she is very lucky you took her away from there
February 26, 200817 yr I'd suggest going to your vet and buying some doxycycline and treat her with it for the next 6 weeks to be on the safe side. Boris eh? My girl Boris is in need of breeding! Edited February 26, 200817 yr by karen

February 27, 200817 yr She is lovely.Ive found the RSPCA tend to flock to 'high publicity' cases not the smaller, lesser ones or on the other extreme they'll visit someone over a neighbour complaint for no reason as one of our members found. Yeah know all about that! She is very pretty, and now you can think of her as a resuce bird because from what you describe I would say that you have resuced her. Having a few girls who I have taken out of bad situations, she is bound to be a bit on the flighty side as she will be wild. However they all come around.
February 27, 200817 yr Author Helga has settle down heaps today, i can put my hand in the cage and put it near her and she does not fly away.she is already drinking and eating a little. she thinks it is more fun to stand in the seed and scatter it everywhere. i tried to give her lettuce but everytime i put in it the bars of the cage she keep pulling it out and dropping it on the bottom of the cage. i think she is going to be a mischievous little girl.
February 27, 200817 yr how wonderful, you know the positive side of this is that she is out of that horrible place and living with you now , no bird could be luckier.
