Posted February 24, 200817 yr My budgies got some peppermint tree leaves and branches yesterday. They also got some young bamboo branches. They go nuts over the peppermint, .....it's like catnip to a cat. Even the babies seem to know its good to eat. I also took some into the parrots aviary and before I even got too far inside the door the Princess Parrots were hanging off the branches I was taking through. Here's some photos. The princess parrots

February 24, 200817 yr My birds see me walking down the yard and hang off the wire in anticipation. They just go nuts over any branches I put in

February 25, 200817 yr How lucky you are able to treat your birds to what is natural to them. These pictures are so amazing ! We have all sorts of bamboo available here in Canada. They sell it for homes as decorations. Is this the same type of bamboo ? Could I offer it to my birds ? I have vases full of bamboo in the den where they hang out. But they never seem to be interested in it & don't even go near it. It has long leaves growing all over it. The Princess Parrots are awesome. I've never seen them before. Are they a nice bird to make into a pet ? Or strictly an aviary bird ?

Are they a nice bird to make into a pet ? Or strictly an aviary bird ? Princess parrots are by nature a gentle bird, so would be ideal for a pet or tame parrot. BUT they do need a lot of flight space. Re your bamboo....the decorative kinds ( dried ? ) would be treated. Home grown should be okay.
February 25, 200817 yr Re your bamboo....the decorative kinds ( dried ? ) would be treated. Home grown should be okay. The bamboo I have is alive & growing. ( IT'S ALIVE ! I call it a TRIFFID the man eating plant ) It grows in water. Some of the little plants I have are growing in dirt. So could try this with my boids ?

February 25, 200817 yr it looks like they love the peppermint, i have been trying to find some to give to mine, still no luck yet. Mee tooooooo!!!! I almost crash the car because i am looking at the trees on the side of the road, rather then where i am going hehehehe. I can't find them any where!! I think they are called Weeping Mertals (sp??) here.....????
February 25, 200817 yr Time for you to start walking about the neighborhood LIV ... just have some pruning sheers in a bag & whistle away while you steal the tree branches you want. NO ... WAIT ! Don't make your neighbors angry for messing their bushes. Better yet ... drive to some far away neighborhood & then walk around there & steal their tree branches & run back to your car & drive home safely. Problem solved. Or maybe you should learn to ride a bike ? ya ya .... I know ... Off topic ! smack me with a big stick !
February 25, 200817 yr Hey Kaz, how are your TWIGS this morning? hahaha NickNack - tooo many giggles for such and early hour....
February 26, 200817 yr Hi Kaz, The peppermint trees in my area were being trimmed by the local council a couple of weeks ago, so my budgies got a big treat of peppermint branches and leaves as well. They not only demolish the leaves, they LOVE to strip the bark as well! Feathers.

I have visions of you trundling along in your wheelchair covered by peppermint branches and peering through them to cross the roads
February 27, 200817 yr I have visions of you trundling along in your wheelchair covered by peppermint branches and peering through them to cross the roads You got the vision right I like it when they trim them, because I can get big branches for my birds to play on, but I don't like it afterwards because I can't reach the branches from my wheelchair to pinch some. I discovered today though, that there are some nice young pepermints growing near the pool I go to for hydrotherapy. I am all set for the next hydro session... I have put secateurs in my bag to cut some off Feathers.
February 27, 200817 yr that is cool Kaz , I love the pictures they look like they are out in the wild
March 1, 200817 yr I have I think bamboo growing - Heaps ... Peppermint trea leaves Hmmmm ...... I need to look at the pics to make sure .I don't want to poision the little buggers ......
March 1, 200817 yr I did some pruning of our Bottlebrush today (in preparation of letting some more winter sun into the avairy), and I gave the budgies and tiels a massive branch each. I agree with all the above comments. They LOVED them. It was really hard to see them as they were hiding amongst the leaves. Last check before night fall, there were still many leaves and bark, but I'm guessing in the morning it wont be the case. It's great that it keeps them busy and keeps my ***** male budgies (2 males to 4 females) minds off giving my Hens unwanted attention.
March 1, 200817 yr I have never heard of peppermint trees before, (Laughing out loud)! I don't know if anything like that grows here. However, I have a bamboo grove so I have tons of bamboo available. The kind you buy at the store and grow in water/dirt as a houseplant isn't really a bamboo. It is called "lucky bamboo" but its not.
