March 14, 200817 yr My birds love broccoli and kale, but I have been more cautious with how much I give them now. Broccoli and kayle are goitrogenic agents, which interfere with the normal production of thyroxine by the thyroid glands, may result in Avian Goiter (Thyroid Hyperplasia or Dysplasia). Feeds containing goitrogenic agents include soybean, flax, rapeseed, kale, cabbage, broccoli, and turnips. http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/VM029 That sounds horrible!! Mine haven't hand any for a while - our hot summer has put broccoli prices though the roof... thanks for the warning.
March 14, 200817 yr Well, everything in moderation as they say. A little broccoli and a little kayle won't hurt, but feeding these things constantly could do damage I would imagine. I try and mix it up a bit with different greens.
March 14, 200817 yr Kaz - l'm slowly trying to get them to try new foods, once l find out what they like, l will mix it up for them and give them a bit of everything they like I tried corn today, Fizzy seems to like it more than Sherbet, but Sherbet being the bossy thing she is, doesn't want him to eat it because she knows he's enjoying it. She is however taking little bites, then moving away. So there is something else that they like Hey Missy EVERY BUDGIE LOVE MILLET ... When I first introduced fruits and vegs to mine it took forever I felt like I was wasting food and Money cause the fresh stuff is way over priced ( so I grow my own) But I got some millet spray and cut them into little bits rather than the long strip and they flew straight to the F&V (fruit & Veg ) and ate the millet then tried all the bits of eggplant and carrots and rice and etc they now love it ........

Neat - thats a great idea Mine are eating the veggie mix, and l think it helped that l put some seed in with it. I had previously tried just a single veggie/fruit on the side of the cage and let them nibble it, let me see what they did like and what they don't. Fizzy likes corn more than Sherbet and neither seem to take to the carrot but will eat it when all the other veggies are gone! I use sweet corn (on the cob but l cut it off for the mix) snowpeas, apple, broccolli, carrot. I made four batches tonight, one l gave them and the other 3 are in the fridge.
March 14, 200817 yr Just remember to make it at room temp So members prefer the "Freshly "made method , But i kinda go over board when cooking & Mixing with my birds so I give them a portion put the other 1/2 in the fridge take it out in the moring for about 20 mins and then give it to them straight away otherwise baterica can start to form ..... I use "Frozen Mixed Veges"thorw them in a cup with boiling water ... for about 5 mins , Drain for 3 mins ( while I make up egg biccy mix and grate fruit mix it all together with a little bit of grit and sometimes rice ... I also give beans there have never been an issue and Wa .La ...
