Too Much?

Just wondering if there can be too much broccoli given in one day?

I have recently found out (today actually) that my two budgies LOVE broccoli!!

I gave them one tree (one of the small trees) this morning and it was completely gone when l got home this afternoon - the only evidence left was little tiny pieces (only a few!) on the floor of the cage and a stalk on the ground nearby.

Now, when l got home, l was really excited, so l put another small tree in. Now, Sherbet being the bossy thing she is, took charge and claimed it as her own, not letting fizzy have any. I felt sorry for the poor little thing, so l put another tree in on the other side of the cage so he could get some too.

My mum questioned whether this was too much in one day?

They can have too much spinach - but I'm pretty sure broccoli is not going to do any harm :)

Agree there... I wouldn't give them that everyday... but two trees each every now and then should be okay!

Probably not too much, but broccoli being one of the more expensive vegies...hope they dont get too used to being spoilt. If they love it that much maybe mix some other vegies they need to try in amongst some chopped up broccoli ?

The expense is crazy - upto $8 a kg here!!!

and I report with great delight that NONE of my budgies like broccoli at all :D

Its full of iron which stops calcium being absorbed. Calcium is far more important for budgies than iron. Spinach is considered a treat only food. maybe a leaf per bird per week.

True about the spinach, but the chinese begies like bok choy and pak choy dont have the same issues. They say not to feed spinach to birds who are breeding.

Are you serious :D !!!???!!! You are kidding, right :( ???? out of 250+ birds, not one likes it!!! :o OMG! mine go bananas over it and are landing on me and eating it from my hands before i can i can even get it to the feeder!!!! :hap:

okay, good

Mine get spinach once a week, and in the aviary, no one can eat too much as there is never the chance. You snooze you lose.

No way do they get a leaf each even. Each leaf is so big, and they do waste a little with their "playign" with their food, that they have no chance of getting too much.

I give some to breeding pairs. That would not be a problem would it? there is calcivet in the water, and they have a cuttlebone as well as a calcium block.

I know daz says protein, protein, protein, but I am not breeding show birds

I would stop giving it to your breeders. breeders are starved for calcium at best. The others will be fine with their once a week treat :D

I might I also add that Broccoli is an excellent source of calcium!!!

price wise, that does not upset me at all
agreed there too - it seems that all the healthy stuff is the most expensive :D

i know, that explains part of my own weight problems. Damn it, why does a happy mela never make me feel happy?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

You could try the happy meal with the pasta instead of the burger, the OJ insead of Coke and the dried apple bits instead of the chips - but then that defies the purpose of junk food :D

I remember driving through macca's drive thru with friend of mine about 15 years ago. She did not get any salt on her fries. She actually redid the lap, got to the window/speaker, and said "I made the decision not to eat healthy when I came thru here, so take these fries and put some damn salt on them!!!!"

Funniest thing

Kaz - l'm slowly trying to get them to try new foods, once l find out what they like, l will mix it up for them and give them a bit of everything they like

I tried corn today, Fizzy seems to like it more than Sherbet, but Sherbet being the bossy thing she is, doesn't want him to eat it because she knows he's enjoying it. She is however taking little bites, then moving away.

So there is something else that they like :D

Broccoli is my birds favorite!! but they also like raw Carrots, raw corn on the cob, boc choi (sp?), Apples, peas and snow peas

Mine like apples, corn on the cob and broccoli.

I am still yet to try them with carrot.

They didn't like celery at all, just looked at it and walked away.

I will have to try snow peas too

I believe that celery is like lettuce - a nothing food with no nutrients. They are smart birds hehehe

When they eat carrots their faces end up orange! Its VERY cute!!! good luck with their new foods

There is nothing prettier in the whole world than an orange faced blue budgie

  • 3 weeks later...

My birds love broccoli and kale, but I have been more cautious with how much I give them now.

Broccoli and kayle are goitrogenic agents, which interfere with the normal production of thyroxine by the thyroid glands, may result in Avian Goiter (Thyroid Hyperplasia or Dysplasia). Feeds containing goitrogenic agents include soybean, flax, rapeseed, kale, cabbage, broccoli, and turnips.
