Posted February 20, 200817 yr A friend I met through work use to breed Budgies and we where talking. I showed her a picture of Harley and she wanted me to come around to see her girl and we are thinking of seeing if they get along and IF we could get some chicks out of the two (I really think Harley is shooting blanks by now but that's not the point) We walk into her apartment to hear all *** breaking lose, run to the cage and there is her little one impailed on an old branch. She had given her a new branch of leaves the other day and "chicky" had eaten all the leaves and attacked the branch and had left a sharp point on one. We figure she much have flown into the branch and it went into her chest. We took her and the branch to the vet who was going to try and remove it. I am so suprised that she was even still alive and there did not look to be much blood loss however she did look exhausted. I know that from now on I will be checking mine morning and night and also changing the way I hang them in the cage to stop this from happening.
February 20, 200817 yr Oh no... That's horrible. I hope she pulls through. Please keep us up to date on her condition.
February 20, 200817 yr Freak accident. No matter how much you watch your birds there will be freak happenings. No reason to say remove all branches. It could have been a part of a toy, a loose section of cage construction, anything. You would not believe the freak things that have either killed or maimed some of mine. You cannot anticipate it all ....just do the best you can.
February 20, 200817 yr I feed on the floor with branches and larger foods , Ive lost to many birds being hooked up strangled or lost feet because their ring had caught on something. But what they say is . Accidents Happen!. Hope she pulls through.
February 20, 200817 yr Kaz is right it was a freak accident, no ones fault and not a reason to remove branches. More of a reason to check branches for any sharp ends and maybe break them off yourself and round up the edges. I hope the little one is okay, keep us updated.
February 20, 200817 yr As others have said it is just a freak accident, I always hang my branches upside down, I hook one forked branch over a perch, which means all the branches are hanging downwards, which might help.
February 21, 200817 yr Hang the branchs upside down like other's have sugessted and replace them before all the leaves have fallen

February 24, 200817 yr Author Just thought you might like to know, she is fine, three stitches and they have to watch for air bubbles but has pulled through. I think the issue was that she put the branch on the side of the cage going into the cage if it has hung from the top then it would not have been an issue. I know that I will be hanging mine from the top from now on and also making sure they are removed when they are almost finished so that they don't get stipped back so far.
February 25, 200817 yr Thats great news!!! A good warning for us all too - I will never look at a branch the same again!
