February 18, 200817 yr Author Fast replies! That's cool! I just bought them on Sunday they are 2 months old. I put them in a 3x2 Foot cage I bought from Deals Direct very annoyed because I had to attach wire to it because it has spacing I think of 3cms or more. Would this sort of cage be alright for breeding? I will add a external nest box of course. Also I have a aviary 2.5m L x 2.25m H x 2.25m W I have 6 canaries 3 finches and now only 1 quail in there some how the other quail got out, I only bought a pair of them on Sunday as well. How many budgies could I put in this aviary? I am planing to breed in more of these cages if you guys say they are alright I will put another 9-12 or so more outside around the back of my house. It will be great if someone could answer these questions for me. Thanks
February 18, 200817 yr Hi dragonx... Firstly your birds are too young to even be considering breeding yet... Your aviary could house many birds easily... However not with canaries or finches in there.... they must be kept seperate... Do you have a picture of your cage that you currently have your budgies in? By the sounds of it it's not suited to budgies at all :S let alone for breeding... More than likely a cocky cage :budgiedance:
February 18, 200817 yr Author Dimensions: 91 x 69 x 62cm which is about 3x2x2 foot and I planing on getting a breeding pair soon and not going to mate my current 2 for another 10 months. Thanks
February 18, 200817 yr That cage looks big enough for your 2 birds. The perches need to run from front to back (not left to right) so that way they can fly a little. i wouldn't put any more than 2 birds in there though. Sounds like you have all the right ideas so far with waiting for 10 months to breed etc :budgiedance: You can not put budgies with any finches etc - common rule (don't mix hooked beaks with straight beaks) The budgies will injure and possibly kill the defenseless finches and canaries. February 18, 200817 yr that cage is designed for a cocky, but once properly wired up and set up well will be fine for breeding
February 18, 200817 yr I would be very very careful with that cage...they will escape from that one...the bars are far too widely spaced apart. No nest box until they are 12 months old...not even for the purpose some people think of a "sleeping place" Check out our excellent article on cages and your type cage is there where we talk about an unsuitable cage for budgies due to bar spacing http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....showtopic=17858 Similar bar spacing A pity you bought it before coming here :budgiedance: Edited February 18, 200817 yr by KAZ
February 18, 200817 yr Author I put wire over that cage in the photo to stop them getting out, I have this cage below that is listed on that cage post can I breed in this cage? If this is fine for breeding and you didn't care for what colours came out could you house 2 breeding pairs in this one? Edited February 18, 200817 yr by Dragonx
February 18, 200817 yr I put wire over that cage in the photo to stop them getting out, I have this cage http://edge3.dealsdirect.net/images/produc...oduct1_1628.jpg that is listed on that cage post can I breed in this cage? Yes you could breed in that cage once they are 12 months. NOT two pairs thopugh unless you divided that cage into a top floor and a lower floor for breeding cages. February 19, 200817 yr Hi and welcome. This is a great place to ask ANYTHING!!!! Best of luck breeding the 'breeding pair' you will buy shortly, and the two at the top of your post in atleast another 10 months. I personally wouldn't house breeding pair together as problems can arise from this. It is better for them and their babies to be caged separately.
February 19, 200817 yr Author I was told that it would be fine to house them together untill they are of breeding age and only then have them together when you are breeding is this correct? or not?
February 19, 200817 yr I was told that it would be fine to house them together untill they are of breeding age and only then have them together when you are breeding is this correct? or not? Which birds are you thinking of housing together ?
February 20, 200817 yr You could use that big cage to house them all together and then when you want to breed to could separate them off into smaller breeding cages.
February 20, 200817 yr I personally wouldn't house different species together. I prefer to keep mine separate, to avoid any problems... especailly as I work during the day and can't keep an eye on them. If anything was to happen, it would be too late by the time I got home from work. I know many members do have mixed avairys, but all birds are different and it would depend on what they are!
