Posted February 17, 200817 yr Hey everyone, I took a trip to a pet store today, one thats on over 1/2 acres (a good section for birds!) and l noticed in the cages that they had a steel bowl with lots of vegetables. Now, l know that theres a post of what not to feed your budgies, but l was wondering, are there a mix of vegetables that you have used and your bugdies love? I know, l know, l should have asked while l was there, but l was there while the store was closing, and all staff members were busy. I saw that they had bits of corn, carrot and other green things, kind of mashed up, in this steel bowl. I'm pretty much asking what exactly l should buy to make a mix of :yellowhead: And do you make a big batch and put it in the fridge/freezer? Also - sorry l know so many questions, but are sunflower seeds okay for budgies? Only because l bought this awesome perch which is a dried out cactus one thats hollow with holes in it, and the sales rep said sunflower seeds are great to put inside it. I'm only questioning him because he was only about 17, so l'm not too sure - so are they alright? Thanks for your help
February 17, 200817 yr Sunflower seeds - Mine love them, but only feed it to birds who have lots of exercise as they will get fat! hehe Vegies mine like - Corn on the cob, fresh or frozen (not from a can) Broccoli snow peas boc choi (not sure of spelling :yellowhead: ) Carrots (not canned) peas, fresh or frozen (not canned) spinach (not too much) Apples oranges nectarines and the list goes on and on..... No ADVACADO! (sp???)
February 17, 200817 yr i have been told by a vet that sunflower seeds are not good for budgies because my budgie has fatty cysts and the vet said that sunflower seed can cause them to happen so i should never give them to budgies.
February 17, 200817 yr Author Thanks Liv - just wondering - do you make a mix of the food you listed and put them in a little food bowl or something similar?
February 17, 200817 yr each day i give them 2 or 3 of the different types vegies, so over a week they get them all - i give it to them raw and pop it in a dish. its best to give fresh foods first thing in the morning (first light), or in the evening(when they have their dinner), as if its given in the middle of the day its more likely to not get eaten and go off.
February 17, 200817 yr Author Oh okay cool :)I noticed in this pet store they had made like a mix of all these different types of veggies - they were very very small pieces, like they were grated or something. i have been told by a vet that sunflower seeds are not good for budgies because my budgie has fatty cysts and the vet said that sunflower seed can cause them to happen so i should never give them to budgies. Thanks for the advice deb :yellowhead: But is it alright if l give it to them, say once a month? Or is not at all good?
February 17, 200817 yr Lots of people grate their vegies for their birds. Personally I'm lazy (i hate cooking hehe) so i just get a carrot out of the fridge, cut it into a few bits, then get some corn and take off the outer leafy stuff, then get an apple and cut that up and remove the seeds, then get some boc choi leaves and put them on the side hehe. no grating, no fine chopping etc, i think they enjoy chewing on a crunchy carrot and sweet corn. i love their oranges faces after they have finished hehe **edit** as for the sunflower seeds. Mine have access to them 24/7 becuase i have cockatiels in the cage too. I have never had a fatty cyst in any of my birds in the last 14 years **Touches Wood** ... so i dont know????? maybe i am lucky there. Edited February 17, 200817 yr by **Liv**
February 17, 200817 yr Author Ha ha, l would have to say that would look cute! The only thing is, l've only ever feed my two budgies apple. I tried some pear but because its not as sweet as apple they didn't really want it. I have tried celery and the dried fruit mix in a container you can buy "Tootie fruitie" or something, but they don't want them.
February 17, 200817 yr my birds can not resist spinach and brocoli!!! they go bonkers over it and will fly down and land on my hand to eat it before i can get it on the ground. Perhaps you could try some? I haven't given died fruit before? Just be careful of sulphates in dried apricots etc
February 17, 200817 yr Author I will be sure to try that I only ask because l'm going to the supermarket later to buy somethings for work, and l would like to get them some nice good food to eat
February 17, 200817 yr after i found out my budgie had fatty cysts, i read an article on fatty cysts and it said that they should have a low sunflower content in their diet but fatty cysts are also cause by overweight so Liv's point about only feeding it to birds that get lots of exercise is right. it is probably not the sunflower seed that is the problem but if they get fat then the cysts can occur.my budgie that has cysts has never eaten sunflower seeds but is overweight, just the vet was saying i had to avoid them.
February 17, 200817 yr lucky birds =D remember not to buy anything that you don't like, that way it wont go to waste if they don't like it
February 17, 200817 yr Ah okay, thanks deb Sorry to hear about your budgie and the cyst thanks Missy,he is supposed to be loosing weight but he has a sprained wing at the moment and cannot fly so he is putting on weight and i cannot see his feet anymore he is that fat.
February 17, 200817 yr Author Poor munchkin I check my birds everyday, and l was (and still do) get worried about a little flakeyness on their beak, which does go away after a day or two, or if their feathers are ruffled, so l could only imagine what you and your budgie is going through.
February 17, 200817 yr he was overweight when i got given him and even though he is in the aviary and use to fly alot, i have never been able to get his weight off him. i hope your budgies will enjoy their nice new food that you are going to get them.

They LOVE corn, silverbeet and apples (no seeds of course) Edited February 17, 200817 yr by maesie
February 17, 200817 yr Vegetables are more important than fruits, they tend to have more nutrients per volume. Also, celery (and lettuce) is made mostly of water and isn't of much nutritional benefit. As for my birds, Milly and Squee go nuts for cooked broccoli, cooked corn and raw carrot. I don't cut these up as they absolutely love tearing it into little bits then go foraging on the floor for them. I figure that's good for their beaks and keeps them occupied. Luckily my babies will test anything new that appears on their "veg peg". They really like silverbeet, bok choi, orange, grapes and spinach but will take most things off the peg (Milly hates tomato and mango, Squee hates bananas). Birds like us have individual tastes so experiment with different foods and forms (cooked/raw, grated/chopped etc). It also takes a lot of patience to get a bird onto veggies if it isn't used to them. As always, no apple seeds or avacado. Sunflowers seeds should only be a rare treat. They have a high fat content. My bird vet likened them to a fried mars bar! If your bird doesn't get lots of exercise or is overweight, I would say avoid them. Edited February 17, 200817 yr by Chrysocome
February 17, 200817 yr I do a variety of foods and seeds on different days Food - Oranges, Lemons , apple, Beetroot , Carrot , Spinach , Celery , Corn , Hibuscus & Eucalyptus branches. Seeds - Hulled oats , Horse Oats , Sunflower , Millet sprays , Wheat , One thing though If you feed sunflower make sure that the seed is hard if it is soft Say where you can easily push your finger nail in it then it is no good the seed will contain a fungus which is not good for the budgies . So a good quality sunflower should be sought.

February 17, 200817 yr As i have weero's an budgies in the same aviary we make up a mix of fresh black sunflower seeds and a standard budgie mix put together (20kg budgie - 2kg sunflower) My budgies tend not to eat the sunflowers and i don't have any over weight birds :hap: For fresh food i give them a bunch of random foods, atleast once a day now... They love any kind of dark green leafy vegetable (cabbage, lettre, spinach, bok choy) They love fresh grasses and milk thistle and are given grated carrot (or steal my rabbits whole ones) Every now and again we give them corn on the cob and hard boiled egg But basically i just chop and mix everything up i can that i have on hand and give them that once daily, if all foods are safe
