sometime back one of my hens developed a problem with one of her eyes...the feathers came away around it and it looked red and a tad weepy, but most of the problem seems to be around the eye, rather than the eye itself.

 

I treated it with detol cream and it improved. It has now come back on her other eye and although i treated it again in the same way it has not healed. She is healthy in every other way ..even breeding in the colony. However, now i notice 2 more birds are also showing similar signs. All three birds have just one eye each affected.

 

Obviously i need to get some medication for this before it speads even more... any suggestions would be welcomed ... Thanks Sue

:ygbudgie: Hi Sue, I was going to suggest something for one budgie but since three are affected, it is time to go to your avian vet for a definitive diagnosis and treatment.

QUARANTINE the sick birds if you haven't already!!!

I agree with Pheobe. A vet trip is in store for all the sick birds.

They will probably need some antibiotics

I agree avian vet is needed... Until you can get to one treat your birds eye with warm salty water to try and wash out infectious matter in there... seperating the birds from the rest is probably a smart idea also

Whatever you have sounds contagious. Have you treated them for mites ? Spot on treatment beind the neck with ivermectin ? Are they scratching more than normal ? Also runny weepy eyes is a symptom of psittacosis which is very serious but I dont think you have that happening or you would also have dead birds.

If you cant get to the vet immediately ( but you should with at least one or two of the birds affected ).....bathe the sore eyes with a teabag.

 

I am not sure if Dettol is recommended for birds.

Thanks for info Kaz .. i have purchase a spray on multi spay for mites etc. I will see how it goes, and again bathed the eyes and treated with dettol. Dettol was the "standard" recommended treatment for canker about 20 years ago when i was breeding budgies. Apparently it has some content in it that works..and it did the couple of times i had to use it... only Dettol ... no other such product had the ingredient. I will try for a short time and if things do not improve i will take further maters. thanks Sue

Definately take her to the Vet , if it is this she requires antibiotics , She may get better like before but she will only relapse at a later date . she may also be a carrier and this can affect the rest of your birds . See your vet would be best to get to the bottom of her problem.

Hey i have the same problem with my budgie he came from a boarding while i was overseas he had infected eyes its actually the same the eyes are not infected but around the eyes there are no fethers and it looks grey around the eye. I took him to the vet 3 times they gave him four different antibiotics and found nothing at all no improvement . I am actually thinking he got trichomoniasis? any help appreciate the poor thing he is crying all day long.

Eyal how long did they treat him before changing yis antibiotics? I just checked back and you only got back from holidays just under a month ago, maybe the problem is just that the vet is no following through with the full course of treatment...

When he was in boarding house the boarding manager took him to her vet who prescribed him psittavet for 10 days.

When i got him he was treated already for 3 days i took him immediately to my vet she had suspicious for Pittacosis we did a blood test he came negative grade was zero.

Then my vet gave him baytril for 7 days (because he was struggling to breath) that while he was getting psittavet in the drinking water (for 10 days) both didn't help.

Then when i went to my vet again she gave him clavulox for 7 days still not improvement.

I am thinking he may have Canker but not sure as he stays where the seeds most of the day without moving and i think the vet has not picked it up.

The budgie is crying almost all day and its realy frustrated me .

I think because he scraches his eyes he moved the infection below his eyes and that why the vets are confused and was thinking he has psittacosis.
