Miracle Baby Budgie

I am totally amazed and gobsmacked at what I just found in a breeder cage !!

Yesterday a pair of dominant pieds gave up on their eggs and babies. Maybe due to the hot weather...not sure. They allowed the first hatched baby... hatched the day before to die, threw out eggs with chicks in them and had broken open the eggs with chicks in too. I removed the devastation they had made and the parents from the breeder cage. That was yesterday morning. A full 30 hours later, I am working around the bird room and hearing the very, very loud cheeping coming from the vicinty of that breeder cage. But as there was a bank of four or more breeder cages in that area, it took me listening closely to find where the sound was coming from.

The loud cheeping was coming from the seed dish in the now empty breeder cage.

In the seed dish was a newly hatched chick ...no egg...just the chick !! It seems the parents yesterday morning, when they broke open some eggs and threw the other eggs around, had opened an egg of a chick due to hatch. The chick was deposited in the seed dish, where I just now found it. It had spent all of a very hot day yesterday and most of today unfed and in a seed dish in the empty cage !! And still was lively and wriggling and asking loudly to be fed. :D

I have just put the chick in anest of a hen that is sitting on eggs. I will check it again later and I have all my fingers crossed for its survival.

Still cannot believe what just happened. :budgiedance:

Sounds like a tough one there KAS , the hot weather must have been enough for it to hatch out and stay alive, hope the hen excepts it for you .

Fingerscrossed

:budgiedance: Hey Kaz, just like my rescue hamster Maggie who was plucked from a horrible situation when young and now is outstanding (as far as hamsters are concerned), your birdie will be fine!!! They are survivors!!! :D

WOW Kaz... that little one is just meant to be alive! Best of luck and I hope its foster mum takes as good care of it as the 30*C and seed dish did :) . My finger are crossed xxx

BAD NEWS....the little chick died. I guess too many hot hours without a feed :)

I am guessing too many hours dehydrated and also he had "yellow belly" > I guess he was pulled from the egg too soon by the parents actions as well. No brownie points for trying. You just do what you can

That really is amazing he survived so long. I'm very sorry to hear the little one didn't make it, though he obviously put up one h*** of a fight!

OH my goodness Kaz how wonderful you found him at least he passed away in a nice warm bed of feathers under another hen :D. ((hugs))
