Posted February 3, 200817 yr Hi all, I'm worried that one of my birds is sick, He seemed normal a few days ago, but for the last few days he has not been acting a bit strange. He is usually really active, but ever since his "partner" found a new partner he has not been as active. He still eats, flies well, preens..but while doings so, he always has a fluffed up appearance, Any information would be great Thanks. (Vent is clean and all looks good).

He still eats, flies well, preens..but while doings so, he always has a fluffed up appearance, Any information would be great Thanks. (Vent is clean and all looks good). Yes! He is very sick! It's a broken heart (Laughing out loud) :(Laughing out loud): It takes two to tango but smoothie is flying solo. Find him another partner and stop checking his vent, your embarrassing him. But seriously if he is fluffed up put him a smaller cage and supply a heat source. supply seed and a weak solution of raspberry cordial. Now the raspberry cordial must have at least 20% raspberry. A lot today have a cocktail of apple and as little as 1% raspberry which is why people say it doesn't work because they are using the wrong one! But raspberry will kill any bacteria in the gut. I have saved more birds with this than any of the expensive remedies. He may have worms which can impact the general condition, so worming your birds wouldn't hurt and some vitamins as a lot of birds are deficient in one thing or another. Goodluck
February 3, 200817 yr Author Thank you . I will keep an eye on him to see if he stays "fluffed up". I have just finished worming my birds and I am going to it again next week. I will give him heat if it carries on, thanks for your adivce .
February 3, 200817 yr If you don't find improvement please check and consult an avian vet. A fluffed up bird sitting in a corner is not always heartbroken but usually pretty sick. Check his dropping and see if they are normal. I would personally move him into a hospital cage or an individual cage so you can keep an eye on his dropping and his behavior.
February 3, 200817 yr Any sick or depressed birds should be removed from the aviary and put into a cage for watching and special treatment. As you are back at school after the holidays you wont be able to watch him as easily, so I would catch him and put him in your hospital cage If you have just finished worming the birds, why are you doing it again so soon ? Remember too, halve the dosage in water on the really hot days we are having. Edited February 3, 200817 yr by KAZ
February 4, 200817 yr Author We are doing the worming as it intructs. I will catch the bird today to be put in the hospital cage. He is not sitting fluffed up in the corner. He is acting normal but everything he does, he still looks fluffed up. Thanks all .
February 4, 200817 yr Is he in an outside avary , he may have got a chill from a drop in temp , move him to a warmer spot and if he continues to eat and drink he should be okay , but do keep a close eye for any changes , good or bad.
February 4, 200817 yr Poor Smoothie. I hope his broken heart mends very soon! Watch him closely, and if he doesn't improve, please take him to a vet . Good luck and let us know how he's feeling!
February 5, 200817 yr Author Update: I caught Smoothie today, (Which took about an hour) and have put him in a hospital cage, I have given him Calcivet. He seems to be a bit more active today, we'll see how he is tomorrow .
February 5, 200817 yr Good update! An hour? You poor thing. You'll love your new investment of a net!!! I can only catch my budgies by hand when they're sick. I'd have no hope without a net when they're fit and healthy!
February 5, 200817 yr Author Yeah, it was really hard, Smoothie is such a fast flyer, he dodged my every move.
February 5, 200817 yr You really do need a net. Its not just that you chased them around for an hour....its that it was an hour of stress for the birds. They can get sick and die from stress, so the quicker you catch them and the less you chase them about the better.
February 5, 200817 yr Author Yes, I agree and I know when I'm stressing them out, I left the cage a few times and tried to sneak in They didn't seem that stressed and the other birds didn't move any way!!
February 6, 200817 yr Author Update: Today when I got home from school, Smoothie was looking alot better, very active, eating, jumping around the cage :oliveb:. I will keep an eye on him for a bit longer before I put him back with the others.
February 6, 200817 yr Little One...he could also have just been heat stressed. As you know we have had some really rotten hot days. Seperating him has allowed him to recover. :oliveb:
