Letting My Fids Out

Featured Replies

Posted

Hi everyone. Just a quick question. My budgies and one tiel arent tame and not clipped (which I wouldnt do) but I want them to have some time out of their cage. How would I go about getting them back in say of a night time or have to go out? Would it be best to limit them to one room? Any advice would be great.

Yes i'd say limit them to one room... It may be very stressful however for them to be chased around the room for hours when it becomes "bed time"... Perhaps look into the least amount of stress levels raised ways of catching them, e.g. a quick netting, or a spray with a water bottle, making them heavy and easy catchable, but this all depends on time of day/night, weather, the room contents ect. good luck :D

A Net . :D

Thankyou. Will get a net this week and then sort somewhere out for them to have their free time.

Yah, how exciting for you. I don't have inside budgies, but find when I have to catch the avairy budgies, a quick net is the go to avoid as much stress as possible. Good luck with their first 'free time' :D Can't wait to here how it goes!

:ygbudgie: If you dim the lights or put a treat in the cages it might coerce them to go back in. (I am assuming they are IN your house and not in an aviary outside)

Yeah they're inside. Just have to find a suitable room thats safe. Thinking the laundry with a screen door might be the go. I'll let you know how things go.

Are your fids confined to one room birdluv? I'd prefer to do that but the only way to keep them confined is to shut doors then i cant keep an eye on them. Maybe just close off all doors into bathroom and bedrooms and let them have free run of the house?

It's always good to "BIRD PROOF" the room you will let them have free time in.

Remember to shut off ceiling fans & check that window screens are in tight or windows are closed.

Make sure there is nothing they can fly into & knock over & cause injury to themselves.

Lamps or lights like halogens should be off. So they don't burn themselves trying to land on a lamp that has been on.

They will fly up to picture frames to be UP HIGH, make sure the picture won't fall.

Loud noise can intimidate them. So loud stereos or tvs, crying children can cause some stress & will deter them from coming out or will scare them out & they will not feel comfortable as they flutter around looking for higher safer ground.

Let the birds come out gradually.

Let them get use to the time & place so they may investigate slowly on their terms.

It's a good idea to place their cage in the same spot for them to fly back to each time. Let them see where their cafe is every time.

These birds know their cage is their safe haven. They will go back to it if they have nothing in their way. Just give them time & make the transition for free time to be slow & easy.

Try to give them free time, every day.

Be prepared to rescue a bird that has fallen behind a shelf or cupboard. I always had a long perch handy to allow them to crawl upon if they slid down behind something & were tired or stressed. They will USUALLY climb up on the perch & you can slowly carry the perch to their cage to let them go to safety.

My birds are out from the time they wake till the sun goes down. I have never had the pleasure of hands on with these birds. I noticed that the moment any noise or anyone new coming into the house will send the birds back to their cage.

I let them do their thing & interact with them by giving them treats.

( I love watching them & hearing them screech with joy when they fly ! When they leave the cage or fly from the play center on top of the cage around the room .... they make so much noise ... as if they are screaming ... LOOK AT ME ! I'M FLYING ! WHEEEEEE !!!!!! " )

Good Luck ... I'm sure you will love watching your birds fly & hang around, as much as they will love their free time also.

Thanks for that nicknack. I will bird proof my home before letting them out for free time. Maybe I'll still get a net to be on the safe side.

yes, l let them fly in my bedroom(which is bird proof) when l'm in there, so l can supervise the :D

I've got a room that can be easily bird proofed but dont like the idea of shutting the door and not been able to keep an eye on them. was thinking maybe could push cage into doorway and block off between cage and top of door. hmm, this is harder than i thought :D once figure something out i'll let everyone know.

Good news. Even though its only a temporary solution i've bird proofed a room and the budgies and tiels can now have free time. Banjo the galah will have seperate time out. I put the cage in the door way and blocked off all escape routes (hopefully). They havent ventured out yet but hopefully they will discover the cage door is open and want to explore. Later down the track i might get a screen door to put on the room so they can stay out while not home. Will get pictures asap.

A screen door is a good idea !

What I did instead was hang a lacy type table cloth in the doorway instead. 2 thumb tacks up on the outside of the doorway holds it in place.

I can see through it & see what they are up to.

They can also see out. I noticed they chose not to come near the doorway now.

They can do what ever they want in the room with me hearing & seeing if there is any trouble. It's worked perfect for the 8 months I've had my birds.

You are going to love your birds having fun & flying in their room, B & K !

Enjoy !

The lacy tablecloth is a good idea. Not real keen on the cage in the doorway, too hard to move if there's any trouble. Will try and get a tablecloth or something similar before next time out. They're back in loungeroom now left door open for about half hour and they didnt even attempt to come out. Will try again tomorrow.

:ygbudgie: I close the bathroom and bedroom doors (well I have one budgie in quarantine in a bedroom, a storage bedroom as well and I turn off the heat in my bedroom) and they are free to do whatever they want, under supervision of course as I sit in my living/dining room so I can access the computer and TV. Right now all the tiels, lovies and tiels are out (although the tiels and lovies and 4 budgies have retreated to their cages and hedgehog is wandering around) and the hamster was out earlier in her ball, am about to shut everybody in for the night. :)

House is pretty bird proof, but there are cupboards and such that they can get behind. Might close off all doors and open cage door tomorrow and see what happens. Will still get net to be on the safe side.

Good Luck... sounds like they're a little timid :hap: Once one makes the move you wont be able to stop them! They're gonna love it!!!

Keep us posted B & K ... I'd like to hear how it goes.
