Thanks everyone. My vet called back today. She spoke to a fellow vet and she agreed the antibiotics and probiotics were a good idea, but they're now on two more meds- Flagyl and Cisapride. She said that this would treat the most likely cause (for the life of me I can't remember what she said). She said when she did the crop wash she was looking for it (swimmers of some sort) and although they couldn't find it, they were 99% sure that's what it is. Hope it makes sense. My appoligies for forgetting the name of the 'bug'... it's hard to remember everthing, especially when I'm worried about them! So... they have medicated water, a drop a day of antibiotics, and a drop of the 'above' meds twice a day. Needless to say, my girls are NOT happy with me at the moment :hap: ... I am getting the hang of how to hold them with one hand without getting biten, and squeezing a minute drop of meds into their tiny beaks with the other!!! Very tricky!!!

My girls also said thanks for your kind thoughts, and that they are starting to feel better :o (crackle even ate some millet today)

Good to know you are on the "homeward stretch" with the illness and solution. :o

When you get a chance, ask for an experienced breeder to show you how to use a crop needle too. Maybe your vet will show you next time you are there. Very, very handy to know...for raising babies. medicating birds etc. Easier to medicate straight into the crop and to administer liquids and wormers etc straight into the crop.....you know you've dosed right and no struggle and no chance of aspirating by the bird breathing it into their lungs via liquids in the beak. :hap:

Thanks Kaz... when they did a crop wash, I was watching closly, and am keen to know how to do it. There was a chance I'd have to crop feed them if they didn't start eating, but it looks like that wont be needed... but agree, I will be asking next time to learn!

So, an update on the girls... Their meds seem to be helping a little and their poos are slightly more normal. I was a little worried as it didn't seem like they were eating. I bought a seed block from the supermarket (they occassionally get them in the avairy). They took to it like ducks to water. So, I'm not so worried about that now, and even though it's not really healthy, I don't mind. I am keeping a close eye on my other two girls and two boys, and I noticed they seem to be also showing early signs as well. No pooy bums yet, but swollen guts... So, I called the vets and they are now also being treated with the same meds. I'd rather be doing them all at the same time than getting my girls better and then having to treat the others. The remaining birds are staying in the avairy which does add to the time it takes me to catch and treat them all (no more sleeping in in the mornings!!! 6am it is), and most times I come out with a different finger bleeding, but I'm getting there and they are all getting the treatment they need. The girls definately bite much harder, and the boys (esp Tweet Tweet) carries on like I'm trying to kill him, but he's the most docile of the lot in regards to biting/moving... Go figure! :D But, all in all, things are hopefully on the up and I'll keep you all informed.

thank you for the update, I hope everything continues to in the right direction

Remember Maesie to keep the floor of the avairy really clean to stop reinfection , and spray the avairy once a week while treating , Id hate for you to get through this and then have a possible reinfection .

Nature , :(Laughing out loud): all girls bite , Dont they . :(

Kas is right , crop needle technique is handy to know . I learnt the hard way , My birds got sick through not doing the full quarintine and I crop feed meds to 80 birds twice a day for three days, ( one fatality :D ) saved the rest .

Goodluck with yours , and I might buy some shares in a bandaid company as I can see their sales going up in the future :D:(

Always make sure with any treatment you do the Whole treatment and not to stop just because the results are looking good. That goes for us as well.

Ask your vet if it is wise to give them a coarse of Fungalin in case mega is present. It should have shown up on the crop wash or dropping test. But some times it doesn't.

Thanks all. Yeah Daz, the meds are for 10 days so they'll definately be having the whole course!!! I've also gotta call them next week so I'll be sure to ask them about mega. Thanks for that.

Thanks lonebudgie. I'm a neat/clean freak when it comes to my animals (pity not about my room :D ) so with them being unwell, the avairy is beyond spotless! As to the biting and bandaids... I'd be happy to halvies in the bandaid company, we could even have bird pics on the and call them birdaids :(Laughing out loud): . You did well medicating 80 birds and I bet you have the crop feeding down pat! Pity about the one you lost though. I'm definately going to learn about it though. It does sound like it would be very helpfull.

So... update time peoples! Crackle is doing MUCH better. Her poos look prety good, nice and formed, she not fluffed up, bum's nice and clean and seems to back to her bickering self. John, the other inside budgie, was the second one to show the illness. She's comming along nicely too. The avairy birds seem okay. One of them (George) seems to be showing more signs than the others. Time for a hospital cage I think. My question is this... as they are all showing signs and are all being treated with the same meds, can I move crackle back to the avairy, and bring George inside for some needed R&R? Or, would I be best bringing her inside in another cage and leaving Crackle inside? My other question relating to this, is that IF I return Crackle to the avairy, and her boyfriend Tweet Tweet starts feeding her again, wont this mean she gets double the meds and he'll get none... surely that can't be good for either of them.

Glad to hear that everyone including Crackle is doing better. As for that question about double medicine that is a good thought but won't all the birds and their partners be doing the same thing? Feeding each other? Good questions for Kaz and those that have experience with aviaries and medicating. :D

I dont Know if your bird has the same problems as mine did , but I once :rip: had a dominent pied hen that took a turn for the worst , I home treated her and she picked up and looked fine, Then after trying to breed with her 3 months later she went down hill again and couldnt fly properly , just didnt seem to have the strength . So its was then off to the vet , he checked her out and seem to think that she had an infection and thought it was from the yolk , when the yolk comes down it drops into an open chamder then goes on to form in the egg as it passes through the hen , He thinks the yolk didnt fall into the right place and came out over the top of the chamber into her body , here it became infected with bacteria and wore her down thus allowing other bacteria to take over the body , she became fluffed up and very lethargic , he dosed her with antibiotics and kept her a couple of days , she picked up and I took her home , I then kept her inside where she was fine for a month, then one morning I found her dead on the bottom of the cage . :( . I rang my vet back and told him what happened and asked if it could happen to more of my birds , He ashored me it was a one off thing and there was nothing I could have done more.

I hope your crackles case is not the same and its just a bug she has picked up , may she hold out for the vet , my fingers are crossed for you and crackle .

Thats called Egg peritonitis,(I think that's how ya spell it) the yolk misses the Infundibulum and falls into the abdomen. True diagnosis is by X-ray the vet can save the bird by flushing and draining the abdomen. They can also give injections of testosterone to stop egg production.

Goodluck with crackles another poor sick budgie. :D:D

:ygbudgie: How is everybody making out today??? :hap:

They're okay... Crackle and John (inside in hospital cage) are fighting heaps... guess that means they're getting better. Mostly, they look okay, but John's tummy is still a little fat (however she did get sick after crackle. I'd like to move them outside to the avairy and bring two of the others inside (recently became sick) as they seem to need the TLC more then Crackle and John. All six are being treated for the same illness, so I'm not too concerned about that. My only issue is the one of my pairs (crackle and Tweet Tweet) feed each other. If I return Crackle to the avairy, won't Tweet Tweet give her HIS dose therefor leaving him with none and giving her double? ... Their meds have untill Saturday untill they are finished (for inside birds) and Tuesday for the avairy birds... Any thoughts anyone? I can buy another cage for hospital care if this is my best option.

Yeah Bec... I've finished their course of antibiotics and they're all back in the avairy. I'm keeping a close eye on Georgie as she was the last to show symptoms, but they're all looking back to their unsocial happy selves, normal bums, feathers etc... (my fingers can now recover!)

Tomorrow is the big clean out. My normal routine is pretty full on, but I'll be removing everyone (i have leather gloves for the biters (((ernie)))), and the avairies are getting a big scrub down with a special cleaner, then a double rince and replacement of perchs and toys (cleaned or replaced). I know they'll all hate me when I take them out, esp the tiels, but they'll love a spotless and 'new' home!

Thanks Bec and everyone who gave me advice and calmed my nerves when I was worried about them. Crackle and co also say thanks for your good wishes xxx

That's really good news  .

And I'm glad your fingers are getting a chance to recover too! ;)

Sounds like you have a busy day tomorrow, I hope you little bubs appreciate your effort (though if they are anything like mine, they couldn't care less and will take great joy in messing it up again  ).
