Posted January 26, 200817 yr Crackle, who's 3 1/2 and is entered in FEB BOM :(Laughing out loud): is not well. I have taken a lead from Kaz (thanks!) and now check Bums before I check anything else, and hers is a little dirty. I tried to catch her (which is usually impossible and results in a blood drawing bite) and I could... not a good sign. I felt her chest(not sure if correct wording???) and it's feels like there is air in there. Usually the others feel um... solid??? but hers feels like there is a sack of air... hard to explain. I sat her on the bottom of the avairy (which has solid sheeting about a metre up from the ground) and she couldn't fly up. I reached down and she got on my hand for me to lift up (this is VERY) out of character! So, I'm really worried. The vet I use is closed today but hopefully open tomorrow (being a public holiday and all) I forgot to mention, her 'boyfriend' has been feeding her since they breed (and failed) month/two months ago. I'm starting to think he knew she was unwell :budgiedance: Any ideas in the mean time???

If you have some calcivet, maybe give her a drop of that too the beak as it also contains glucose which is a good pick me up. But the vet should be the best next thing to do. The sac of air you describe may mean she has canker or sour crop...a crop filled with air kind of symptom. Hope she sticks with you until treatment begins. All the best Maesie :angel1:

She didn't seem as fluffed up last time I checked her. I'll be sure to keep you all updated.

January 27, 200817 yr I dont Know if your bird has the same problems as mine did , but I once had a dominent pied hen that took a turn for the worst , I home treated her and she picked up and looked fine, Then after trying to breed with her 3 months later she went down hill again and couldnt fly properly , just didnt seem to have the strength . So its was then off to the vet , he checked her out and seem to think that she had an infection and thought it was from the yolk , when the yolk comes down it drops into an open chamder then goes on to form in the egg as it passes through the hen , He thinks the yolk didnt fall into the right place and came out over the top of the chamber into her body , here it became infected with bacteria and wore her down thus allowing other bacteria to take over the body , she became fluffed up and very lethargic , he dosed her with antibiotics and kept her a couple of days , she picked up and I took her home , I then kept her inside where she was fine for a month, then one morning I found her dead on the bottom of the cage . . I rang my vet back and told him what happened and asked if it could happen to more of my birds , He ashored me it was a one off thing and there was nothing I could have done more. Â I hope your crackles case is not the same and its just a bug she has picked up , may she hold out for the vet , my fingers are crossed for you and crackle . :feedbirds:
January 27, 200817 yr I hope Crackle manages okay till you can get her to the vet. My guys always seem to know when the avian vet is away or closed, and that's undoubtedly when something will go wrong.
January 27, 200817 yr Author Thanks EVERYONE for your concern. It does make me feel better. I feel horrible when they're unwell and can't help feeling guilty. I guess because they don't show their symptons until they're really unwell, I feel like I've let them down... But, if they don't look unwell, what else can you look for? I'm always pretty carefull at looking out for signs of illness (poo, bottoms, fluffed up etc), but in an avairy it can be hard at times. I'm pretty confident I've caught it early, so fingers crossed xxx Thanks everyone again and I'll let you know how we go.
January 27, 200817 yr Author Mixed news... The Vet is closed due to the Public Holiday today , so tomorrow night after work will be the go now. On a lighter note, Crackle seems to be doing okay and had a little fresh corn this morning. I'm trying not to bother her too much as I don't want to stress her out, but I'll give her the once over today to see how things 'feel', and really are. Here's Crackle below. Â Â And here's John (female grey in middle) She's not showing symptons like Crackle but her "chest" is bigger. It's really odd. Â Â They both have trouble flying up, but John can get up to the wire... Maybe they're fat??? or with eggs? I know they both have boyfriends and I have seen Crackle and Tweet Tweet do the deed many times. I guess I'll just see what the vets say tomorrow. I'll keep you all updated. January 28, 200817 yr Hugs maise hoping for a quick recovery but I have no doubt that she is in the best care right now. Keep us updated on her condition and the avian vet visit.
January 29, 200817 yr Hi Maesie and Crackles. Just wanted to wish the best positive result that comes both your ways at the Vets tonight My thoughts are with you both and everything that I can cross, is crossed Happy thoughts... Kim
January 29, 200817 yr Author Thanks so much everyone!!! Â So, I was off to the vets with Crackle and John (both females)... She was very good. She took poo samples and did a crop flush. She also examined them both... After checking out the poo and crop samples, she found that the bacteria levels were out of kilta a little. She's keep the test results and will confir with a fello bird expert just to be on the safe side. So, my girls are in a warm dark room, with a drop of antibiotic paste a day (to get rid of the bad bacteria) and probiotics in their water, to restore the good bacteria. Yesterday after giving Crackle a dose of liquid calcium, I did notice she has picked up a little... My vet also said Crackle is most likely getting over her issues, and John has just got it... but it's a good sign Crackle is looking up as John hopefully will to. I've gotta keep a close eye on the others and step in if need be. So, here's hoping for more improvment!
January 29, 200817 yr Author Yeah... I've been to normal vets (never again for birds) before but this one was awsome! She's not my normal avian vet, but I was very pleased with her. She's even going to call me tomorrow with any further news from the other bird vet :hap: Edited February 2, 200817 yr by KAZ edited AVARIAN into avian
January 29, 200817 yr Congrats, to you crackle and john :hap: glad to hear all is looking up from here
January 29, 200817 yr Author Thanks Deb and Libby. I'm really relieved that it's nothing serious and fingers crossed for continued improvement and no more casualties xxx
