Posted January 26, 200817 yr Hi There, I breed regular pet budgies already, and i am considdering having a go at breeding some show quality birds too. I dont know if I would use them in a show, I just like the strong healthy look of a show budgie. i would really like some advice on how to pick good quality parents. What colours are special? When is a big bird, really "Big"? Where can i get some qualiy birds from here in SA? Thanks for your time. Liv

Liv In the show breeding world...getting the size and type right is top priority over mixes of colurs. You will have to buy some good quality show stock to begin breeding as trying to breed up from some nearly there kind of pet types will take forever and maybe never get there. Big ? Its like asking how long is a piece of string It isnt just BIG...its about deportment, length of mask, type of feathering, position of the eye in relation to the skull ( backskull) spots, markings, etc. Lots to learn and not just about size. January 28, 200817 yr Thanks for your replies.I have been doing some reading though the different breeding topics.... WOW there are so many things to keep in mind when breeding for a show Hmmmm Maybe breeding to quality pet birds is more for me Thats the challenge of it , Not just enjoying the birds but breeding something you create and then showing that bird against a very competive field of birds , To win is something special , To win Grand Champion is the ultimate
February 5, 200817 yr I started breeding show budgies last year, although I did not show any I will start showing at club level this year & speak to the judges in regards to where I need improvements, Also my fellow club members are also giving me advice. I have attended almost every club meeting since joining, soaking in all the advice & having a really good look at what birds win & comparing them to what I currently have. I also listen to guest speakers taking in valuable information. So finger's crossed I may pick some club awards up later this year.
