Posted January 25, 200817 yr My young bird Bella has very strange toes they are bent in all directions, as she was like this when bought i do not know the cause. suggestions on how this came about. it does not seem to harm her in any way yet her toes get caught sometimes and she can't grip properly. :budgiedance: you can kinda see in this photo http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee182/L...et/101_1657.jpg changed to links, picture above regulation size. January 25, 200817 yr :ygbudgie: This can be caused by a nutritional or positional disorder in the egg but she seems to be adapting well. :budgiedance:
January 25, 200817 yr As already stated, it doesnt seem to be making her uncomfortable, and i too would put it down to either malformation whilst young or lack of nutrients... I'm unsure if anything can be provided to strenghten the toes/bones now, but perhaps a Vet can help you with that conclusion...
January 25, 200817 yr Please dont rely too heavily on petshop advice. They most often get things wrong and are not as well able to give expert advice on budgies as the advice you will find here on this forum. Anyitme you need advice, please ask here first before you ask at the pet shop :budgiedance: The foot issue seems to be as advised due to nutritional deficiencies when breeding the parents. A lack of calcium or iodine. It can also be caused by a parent biting at the babies feet and breaking toes. Nothing that can be done now, and most budgies adapt to things like this.
January 25, 200817 yr also if Bella was ever to breed would it ...be passed on to the chicks? Not unless you didnt feed Bella well with all that was required to make her and the chicks very healthy. You have removed the nestbox, havent you ?
January 25, 200817 yr Author Yes! nest box totaly removed not a shred of news paper in sight although my dog did try to eat the nest box when i took it out :budgiedance:

January 25, 200817 yr Eating the nest box... Sounds like something my cat would do! If she's having trouble gripping her perches, you could try replacing some of her round perches with flat ones (like a shelf). This way she could just sit on it with out having to try and grip and it might give her feet a rest if need be. I know a few members here have budgies with leg/feet issues and have done this. Just to give her an alternative :budgiedance:
January 25, 200817 yr Author thanks maesie!! i think she can perch fine though and any way i have sticks not rounds poles
January 25, 200817 yr That's okay... round post/stick are the same thing in this instance as she needs to grip both. I just mentioned it because in your earlier post (below) you mentioned it. My young bird Bella has very strange toes they are bent in all directions, as she was like this when bought i do not know the cause.suggestions on how this came about. it does not seem to harm her in any way yet her toes get caught sometimes and she can't grip properly. :budgiedance: you can kinda see in this photo http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee182/L...et/101_1657.jpg changed to links, picture above regulation size. If she's doing okay now I wouldn't worry but if it was to get worse you could consider it.
