i love budgies! they are my fave birds i have two currently ,they are VERY much in love!

my female, Bella has entered the nesting box which is actually round like a hole in the tree.

Is newspaper alrite for the nesting box, and is it toxic for birds because mine like to...well lets just say have you ever seen two budgies play tug of war? my female Bella is only about 4 months and i have a budgie book that advises against breeding young, advice...? should i take the nesting box out?

Thanks

Bella is only about 4 months and i have a budgie book that advises against breeding young, advice...? should i take the nesting box out? Absolutely take out the box your babies are only babies themselves and are not mentally ready to breed. It is advised to wait until they are at least 12 months but many will wait at least 15 months to ensure a successful clutch.

Please continue to read about breeding your budgies you have a good 10 months more to learn by staying here and watching others, following their journals, reading books etc...and our budgie breeders that are experienced can give you advice along the way when your budgies are old enough to breed.

As for your link it just goes to photobucket and not any pictures.

Welcome to the forms.

As for the newspaper here in the US it is non-toxic in AU I am unsure.

The fact you you have the nesting box is the reason Bella is acting as she is.......PLEASE, PLEASE remove that nesting box.

Welcome

Please do not breed your Bella until she is at least 12 months - she could get egg bound and die :)

even though Bella can have babies... it is the same as saying someone's 9 year old daughter can have a baby because she has her period....

Sorry the picture didn't work - came back with an error :)

I would probably seperate until they are old enough - budgies do have sex for fun sometimes.... but i am not sure what the outcomes of that is???

Taking out the nest box is the first step and will help stop Bella getting to broody.

I would seperate them but bella gets VERY anxious if she is away from petie and trys to fly to him but just kindaa..flops and makes a horrible sound...wings clipped i don't know how she would handle that.

Depending on how long you had the nestbox in, would indicate if your hen has begun to form her first egg ready to lay. Removing the nestbox would be the very best thing you could do right now. Make sure there is nowhere she can nest...no nesting materials, no food dishes she would see as a nest, change all items in the cage around as a distraction etc. If by any chance an egg is laid now, it will be from the perch and you must throw it away. It is nothing until incubated anyway.

A lot of bird books areold and the information is outdated. THIS FORUM is the best place you could have come for specialist advice :)

:ygbudgie: Glad you have taken the nestbox out, and as for the rest, listen to the experienced breeders/owners on here with many budgies to see if they should be separated. But on a lighter note, WELCOME!!!! I am sure you will find this site informative and fun!!! :)

I have only had the nest box in for about 2 days and she has only entered it once b my knowing, although she rarely moves from the outside of it,

ah i love the sound of a budgie chatting in my ear

also this is a new Budgie book,

:ygbudgie: TOO YOUNG!!! Remember that most here are experienced breeders and know what they are talking about to avoid you problems and heartbreak. May I suggest you start reading the FAQS, and enjoy your reading experience, once again, welcome, glad you came here!!! :)

the budgie book is correct it says don't breed until they are at least 12 months is what you said so that is excellent advice

I see you have BUDGIE BREEDER as part of your profile information. Do you also have another pair of older budgies that you are breeding ?

I personally Petieandbella... would not say that australian newpaper is harmful to budgies in any way shape or form as most cages are lined with it. As a nesting material unless very finely shredded would not be appropriate as it's too light and would bury the eggs. Like other members have said your birds are far TOO YOUNG to be breeding. A pregnancy at the hens age could results in some very horrible outcomes. It's best to do some research, get some very knowledgable contacts, the right equipment and some patience to learn it all before attempting to breed. When i was younger (11) i thought i could breed budgies even though i knew nothing about them or their reproduction, I was however one of the lucky ones who didnt lose a budgie thanks to my ignorance, but many members on here have had close calls like me, or even worse outcomes. You've done the right thing by asking about your birds and seeing if what you've done is right... So my suggestion is in the time you are going to be waiting for your hen to mature, to get as much knowledge on budgies and the reproduction, diet, care and all other aspects as you can.

Good luck to you petie and bella and I look very much so forward to your outcomes later down the track :)

:) I think this post has gone far longer than it should, Petie and Bella should NOT be breeding, please heed the warnings of the professional budgie breeders with many budgies. Any further breeding activity discussion will not be tolerated. Please enjoy your beautiful budgies and forget about the breeding for now! :hap:

It is very easy to get excited about breeding budgies, especially when you see baby budgies posted on forums. The main thing to remember, is ...

A budgies first kiss and cuddle is NOT a sign to put a nest box in.

Budgie sex is NOT a sign to put a nest box in.

Giving a budgie a place to sleep is NOT a reason to put a nestbox in.

A budgies FIRST birthday is more a sign you can put a nestbox in, after having researched and learnt a lot along the way.

If you cannot wait...I would suggest you buy an older ( over 1 year old ) breeding pair and set them up in a breeder cage to breed with...only after a settling in period, quarantine, and after their dietary needs have been met and their health is at an optimum level.

Having bred over a thousand baby budgies and having owned many hundreds of budgies I can advise you from both my experience and my heart :)

PS hearing first thing in the morning ( for me ) about a person who has a 3 month old set up with nestbox just makes your heart sink and gives you a feeling of dread :hap:

yes i have removed the nesting box, thankyou very much and i think i get the picture i feel a little offended i didn't know that it was not a good idea why do you think i asked.

i love my birds and i get distraught just thinking about them dying having alredy lost a bird to sickness, hich happen to be one year ago today

thank you for all your advice

Don't feel offended there are so many people on this forum that care and are very passionate about the care of birds (budgies). We see so many people who don't heed advice and it is hard to show emotion through just typed words. So know that the questions are in concern for your budgies and not meant to be offensive in anyway :budgiedance:. Glad you took out the nestboxes.
