Posted January 18, 200817 yr Hey everyone, I am still pretty new to having a budgie and am wondering if this cage I have is suitable for 2 budgies...Id like to get Zeus a little brother Comments are much appreciated thankyou http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj115/g...1/cutiezeus.jpg http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj115/g...81/zeuscage.jpg http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj115/g...81/sideview.jpg http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj115/g...1/zeuscage1.jpg
January 18, 200817 yr Its a very nice cage, but is more tall than wide. Budgies need a wider cage to be able to fly back and forth across the cage. The perches in yours run across the width and would be better situated from front to back to allow flight from one to the other. Do you notice he clings to the sides of the cage a bit ? As they seem to prefer flying across and the perches set up the way they are would allow walking along to go from side to side, but would be in the way for flight across. A clear indication that perching and size needs looking at is how much a budgie clings to the side, looking for its next best way to get around or across a cage. I would suggest a cage at least 2-3 ft wide and about the same height or a little less. Like this one http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Bird-flight-exercis...1QQcmdZViewItem or wider than that, Edited January 18, 200817 yr by KAZ
January 18, 200817 yr I agree from the front it looks bigger but the side view really puts it size and it really doesn't even look big enough for 1 budgie so I would go with Kaz's suggestion. We also have member set-ups in our FAQ section under Cages I believe where you can see different ideas.
January 18, 200817 yr Author I think the measurements are 47cms(18inch) height,44(17inch) width and 31cm depth. I cant afford to get a new cage at the moment, we got this one about a month ago...are there any tips on how to make use of the space it has? and maybe i should wait to get a bigger cage later on for a playmate for zeus?

I would adjust your perches to fit two perches front to back so Zeus can flit across the cage instead of sidewalking across the perches he has now. That will make him happier. But I would NOT add another budgie to that size and type cage. When you are able to get the bigger wider cage, the cage you have now will do as a quarantine cage for the new budgie who will have to be kept seperate from Zeus for a minimum 30 days.

January 25, 200817 yr i have 2 budgies in about the same size as that just a bit more wider...i think it would fit 2 in there if you rearranged the sticks! There is a difference between how many budgies will FIT in a cage and whats more SUITABLE for a lifestyle for two budgies. A cage can never be TOO LARGE however very often a cage can be TOO SMALL.

Agree Kaz! Regardless of how much 'out of cage' time they have, you've gotta look at it from their point of view. Even if you 'say' they'll be out all day everyday, there will still be times when they aren't, and if it happens a lot, this will lead to fighting, illness and unhappy birdies . January 25, 200817 yr The fact that these small cages (and smaller) are available for purchase in petshops etc is madning because they are way too small, and unsuspecting buyers dont realise this until its too late. It could be thought of like a person living in a 1 bedroom appartment, when what they really want is a million dollar mansion . I personally wouldn't panic too much... just aim to save up and get a bigger cage when you can.
January 25, 200817 yr I completely agree there with maise and Kaz you really have to look at it from their point of few they are born to fly from perch to perch. If they don't have enough room I believe to be able to personally fly without having out time the cage too me is too small. That is me though. As Liv said work toward getting a bigger cage you can always keep the smaller one for quarantine in the future or a sick cage. On E-Bay you will find cages for very reasonable prices. My cage is listed in Cage Set-ups in the FAQ section it can house 4 comfortable and it was only 100.00 US.
