Worming Budgies Question

Featured Replies

Posted

:D okay I have read a lot of posts where people say I should worm my budgie, but no one has said where you get the stuff to do it from?????? How do I do it or should I just take him to a vet?

Also if he is only about three weeks out of the nest, should he be wuite plump across his chest, or is it normal for him to be quite lean? He seems to be eating plenty of seed, but is quite skinny really.

Just thisafternoon he seems quite lethargic and sleepy. It may just be that the temperature has risen here quite fast and he is feeling the heat. I have sprayed him with a spray bottle. His poo seems okay, not really runny or anything. I am cleaning his cage out thisarvo as well so he has a spottless cage.

Can anyone offer advice on this?

Thanks guys

You can get worming syrup from any bird supply place or pet store. No need for a vet for worming meds. There are various brands, just follow the directions .....they all involve putting it in the drinking water over a few days. While using the worming syrup in their water give no other sources of water like vegies during that time. In summer its best to do once a month ( especially if the aviary is on a soil floor ) and every 3 months otherwise. If its a chick our of a nest they will have contracted worms from the parents and it goes in cycles.

Also if he is just a couple of weeks out of the nest and lean, thats most likely normal for him and for his type, especially since you have checked all the other possible symptoms :D

I went in just before and he was laying upside down on the bottom of the cage. I am currently trying to get a vet on the phone to take him there. Man I hope he is okay. He seems really lethargic and sleepy. Usually he comes up to the side of the cage and chirps away at me, but he is just sitting there or when he tries to get to me he seems to have no strength.

What do you suggest?

Laying upside down seems odd. I have had that before and it was discovered the baby budgie had epilepsy and had suffered a fit. Urgent attention needed sounds like :D

Oh no... you poor thing. Vet treatment asap!!! Good Luck. Let us know how you go -_-

-_- okay I have taken beaky to the vet and he has to stay there for the next couple of days. She weighed him and he is only 23 grams. I feel so bad because she said he has probably been sick the whole time we have had him, but hidden it really well. She is going to give him a shot of antibiotics and put him in a cage with a heat lamp and observe him, etc. She said there is no guarantee that he will pull through though. My kids are devastated, not to mention me. How do you break it to a 6 and 4 year old that their pet may not live, or has died. I so hope he pulls through. I will keep you guys posted. She said it is nothing that we have done.

Now all we can do is hope for the best.

You poor thing. All my thoughts are with you and your little beaky. He'll pull though! He is now in the best place for him and I'm sure they'll do all they can to help the little fella. ((((((((((((((((hugs))))))))))))))))))) maesie xxx

To fall over like that he is very very weak. Here's hoping he will come through this for all of you

I hope beaky pulls through, my thoughts are with you and your family.

:D Beaky died overnight. The poor little thing. The vet said he was probably sick the whole time we had him and there are probably others out there from that store as well. She did all she could but you all know what birds are like when they are really ill. Now I am looking for a good breeder in my area and a bigger cage as well. My daughter was devastated. Especially as it is her 6th birthday today.

I am picking up his cage later and we are going to bury him in our backyard with our guinea pig that died last year "Winston".

Thankyou guys so much for your advice along the way. I will keep checking out the site and hopefully have some happy news for you all very soon.

Thanks again

Katherine

P.S. Do you guys think I should report the store to the RSPCA? -_- They should not be selling birds that are too young or ill.

I am very sorry to hear this Kathy, but it was my fear that he would die after hearing your news yesterday.

Reporting the petstore wont help in this case as I have done it for more concrete reasons before and our RSPCA over here is really a toothless tiger and they do little. You really have nothing they can pin on the pet store. Most of these things happen because they buy from 2 or 3 different sources and then put them all in togather. Budgies also get sick due to stress of being caught and transported and new homes etc. Your little one most likely never really learnt to eat properly and well. They are masters of making us think they are both well and eating when they arent and most likely he was younger than they said too. Who knows.

But here is the best place to learn things in preparation for your next budgie. If you can find one of our members on here thats close you and has budgies for sale, it might be better.

Re the cage. If yours was the tallish round shaped cage ( I am not sure but I think thats what you had ) then thats a canary cage and not truly suited for a budgie, so a larger cage ...wider rather than taller for the next budgie will be good.

Bigggest hugs Kathy. Best of luck with the next little guy. :(

So sorry for the news. :angel1: He is in peace now. They are pretty sneaky buggers. When you can see that they are unwell, it is usually to late. My thoughts are with you and your family. Good luck with your newbie when the time is right. maesie xxx

Sorry to hear of your loss, but I agree with Kaz, once you said how your bird was, I too also thought it was too late, as once birds get that ill the chances of them recovering are very slight. Make sure you disinfect your cage & then leave it out in the sun for a day or so, before you get a new bird, as what it had may be infectious.

:rip: Beaky, so sorry this happened.

Don't worry guys, I am totally scrapping the old crapola cage and getting a completelly new one. My mother in law bought the last one without consulting me. I would have never got such a small cage otherwise.

I met up with Sunnie today. She is a wonderful breeder and her birds are so happy and well looked after. SHe can hold her head high there!

We are getting the new cage in the next couple of weeks and then we will get our new birdie from Sunnie. I can't wait.

Thanks for all the well wishes, it has really made me feel much better about the whole fiasco that was our first Budgie experience.

Hugs to all

Kathym1977

Not a great start to your Budgie experience... but I'm sure your next one will be much better and you'll fall in love with budgies and birds in general. Next thing you know your flock will grow... budgies, cockatiels etc... ^_^ Can't wait for your new arrival. maesie xxx

I havent been on the forum for quite a while, not spending time at the computer much for personal reasons. It was lovely to meet Kathy and her kids the other day and I am glad she enjoyed seeing our birds. I am going to be keeping in touch with Kathy letting her know what has recently fledged as I like to take my babies, who are to be hand tamed, from the aviary asap and make sure they are eating properly and do some handling so they are nice and calm and ready to go on with. Unfortunately Kathy would prefer a male and I am getting nothing but hens lately! but she is happy with a hen too if we can find her a colour her son likes (blue or yellow). I have lots of jellybeans waiting to colour up at the moment, so as soon as something comes along in her colour, we will be in business ^_^
