Posted January 1, 200817 yr i have bred 2 of these from a clutch of 6 young, the others are yf1 blue and normal blue. the parenta are mauve and mum is opaline yf sea-greeny. any guess what combo this 1 is and could i get rainbows if i put this one to a white wing blue? thanks i just love this combo
January 1, 200817 yr I am no expert, but I say it is a Yellow face Type2 opaline cobalt. The yellow face is obvious, you can see some of the yellow leaing through anc changing the stomach feathers to green, from blue, opaline is obvious, and it looks more cobalt to me than mauve.
January 1, 200817 yr yep a cobalt YF2. If mum is a YF2 as well(by the sounds of it) then the other baby wont be a type 1 but will bleed the colour through after his moult- still a type2
January 3, 200817 yr as the others have said yellowface type 2 opaline. Matching this one to a white wing (Clearwing) you would only get rainbows if this one is carrying the clearwing gene as well, as it is recessive and both parents need to have the gene for the young to appear as one.
January 3, 200817 yr Opaline Breeders take note , Look at the back of your bird it has no black markings at all only ground colour the wings only have the black markings . A beautiful opaline budgerigar , this is how they should look , Congratulations ! , The bird is obviously not a show bird but a good example of how the opaline should look , Beautiful.

I have notice that he “pet” Australian type Budgie tends to have better clear base colour triangles between the wing butts, but in general the British “show type” Budgies have lots of strong baring…selection for this trait must not have been so strict.

I agree , the early breeders of the opaline have let this variety down , unfortunatly the opaline is used more for its size and spot abillities in normals and the loss of the clear v in the back is all but gone. How beautiful would this variety be in the full show standard form . Especially in the violet cobalt or violet green I would love to see one .

Yes I agree, it sounds like the Opaline isn’t a popular Mutation these days, but they are one of my favourites.
