Curry And The Showgirl

A few members on here know of one of my favourite pet type budgies....CURRY. He has fathered some beautiful chicks and been a very good and doting Dad to those babies in the past. Well, he cottoned onto a SHOW type hen in the aviary :hap:

As the little flirtation went on for some weeks with no changes, I let them go together in a breeder cage.

Here is Curry

They got down to business within days and produced 7 eggs. So far 3 chicks have hatched.

Now I know that Curry ( a texas clearbody ) and his hen ...a cinnamon green opaline most likely shouldnt be a perfect match genetics-wise.

BUT we wait to see what the chicks will be like.

Goodluck with the eggs do u know if the other 4 r fertile

They will be interesting to see feather up- glad to see you still have him!!

Look forward to seeing the babies :hap:

Such a romantic story Kaz…(Laughing out loud)…the roughian & the showgirl…no seriously good to improve your TCB stock never know, I might need some new TCB blood one day.

Do you know if Curry is split for Opaline? As I think the TCB mutation looks good in the Opaline series. Looking out for some nice hen TCB's & split cocks.

I spotted what I think is a TCB in the pet shop yesterday, it's a Cinnamon Grey, but it's flight primaries are faded, so of course I bought it, not sure yet if it's a hen or cock. Never seen any signs of TCB's around here in pet shops. I don't have any Blue series TCB's which I hope to rectify soon, with my breeding program.

This round my TCB to TCB pair didn't go down, hen maybe moulting, but even though one of the other pairs only hatched one chick out of 10 eggs it turned out to be a TCB hen & now one of the other eggs hatched & was fostered, so I still have the chance of another. The other pair who only had one TCB hen first batch, has made up for things with 5 TCB hens & one Normal.

PS. Curry aint that Rough anyway, I like him.

Curry is handsome but he's far removed from a show type. Just a pet type Texas clearbody. I just have a soft spot for him thats all, and let him win over the girl he had chosen. Doubt if any good show type chicks will come out of it. But he has produced Texas clearbody chicks before.

Would love to see some pictures of your cinnamon grey Norm. It sounds very nice.

I was looking round the aviary yesterday and noticed a half dozen really nice birds. I was thinking to myself "Now where did you come from ? " I caught them up and checked their legrings, and realised that I had bred them myself and they had got past their first moult and grown and turned out rather well. One green hen who is chasing all the boys...outragious flirting....she was a green chick that had dropped all flights upon fledging. Now she is a stunner :hap: Its nice to see some improvements in the birds from where we first started.

Happy 2008 :rip:

Kaz, it may take a little longer to produce the desired show type birds if you breed them to other than show type birds, but with patience it can happen & that’s what it is all about I think the ART of breeding. I think that some pet type Budgies have characteristics that are desirable in show birds. I have already notice what I call improvements in birds that I have bred this year, still a long way from show, but it feels good to see what I have done & to me it’s more important than winning at shows. Especially with some of the rares that I have started out with there is no other way, as you are limited with what you can get to start off with.

Great story Kaz. look forward to seeing more photos when they begin to colour up.I love TCB's. I always look forward to Norm's updates because of this.
Thanks Dave, nice to know someone is interested, will get some more pictures when they have been through their moult, some I think look like they will be quite good looking, plus six more chicks on the way.

Well, one thing I do know Norm is at least two of the chicks in that nest are taking after their mother as I have had to ring them earlier than a pet type would have been. We shall see what comes out of that nest. Pet types most likely.

I also would love to see more of your pictures when you get a chance. Can we also have some pictures of the bee keeping set up...that would be very interesting. :D

Chicks are looking well Kaz & a few light skins, maybe TCB’s…I have had what I think are big improvements in crossing English type birds to my other birds, there seems to be a big improvement, whether that will continue in future generations remains to be seen.

4th chick hatched today on a very hot day. 40 degrees centigrade and serious bushfirses in and around Perth Western Australia. In this nest so far no chicks hatched with plum eyes so no cinnamons like the Mum. Guess that means curry isnt split for cinnmon. Good thing.

hhmmm... Sparky, or Blaze, (Stinker, Sweaty? (Laughing out loud))

There is now a 5th check in that nest, but an adopted foster baby. I found a hen yesterday that has not fed her two chicks during the hot weather so one had died and the younger newer one was yelling to be fed and was lively. Thats chick is now in Curry and his hens nest. Curry is a good dad and feeder so the chick should be okay with them. 5 chicks and maybe more to come.

Awww what little cuties!!!!!!!!!

Two eldest chicks are normals. Third chick has a lot of yellow pin feathers on wings and tail. Fourth chick is still pink. Fifth adopted chick had to be put down as enthusiatic parent feeding broke its neck. :D

great story good luck with the chicks!

seeing as im new to the whole bird world... what are the physical differences between the pet type budgies and show type budgies and do show type budgies still make good pets???

Edited by Andrew

Yes show types make good pets just like the smaller 'pet budges'

The only differance is show budgies are larger and have thicker feathers that make them look 'fluffier' than the slim lined pet ones.
