Wing Clipping

Featured Replies

:D I am considering clipping our budgie's wings just the once to help with taming him. But I need a picture of how to do it. Like which feathers to do.

Are there any pictures on this site, or does anyone have pictures of how to do it? I have looked and looked and am more confused than ever right now.

Thanks guys.

I (and I am sure others) suggest that if you have never done a wing clip on a bird to have someone show you in person how to do it (such as an experience vet who can clip, an avian vet or your reputable local pet shop or breeder in your area.

You need 2 people one to hold and stretch out the wing and another to cut and help hold the wing. You can do searches and find pictures but I always found it to scary because I didn't want to cut too short because they can bled to death very quickly. When you cut wings or nails aways have a blood stopping substance to stop the bleeding immediately. That is my advice :D.

I agree with Elly. I have never and prob never will clip any of my birds (they are all in the avairy so don't see the need). However, if I was to do it, I would watch someone else do it first. I'd be too scared to do it on my own. You could even get them to do one wing, and you could do the other (with their guidence). That's my thoughts anyway. Good luck!

I completely agree, for the well being of your budgie, it's best to have their wings clipped by someone who knows what they are doing e.g a vet.

If for whatever reason you choose to do it yourself, like Elly suggested, have a blood stopping substance like corn flower or unscented soap.

:D

Be very sure that your chosen "person who knows what they are doing" ( including vet or so called expert ) ..........clips BOTH WINGS :D

:ygbudgie: I too, recommend somebody experienced in this area, there are 2 types of wing clips that can be done (both sides always) and then you can do it yourself next time. I do modest clips throught the year on my tame birds but have about 3 GOOD clips every 4 months. :ygbudgie:

If you do decide to clip your next baby's wings, there is a local vet near us who did one of my parrots and only charged I think $9.50. For peace of mind and a job well done, I found that a very small price to pay ^_^

I have to agree, if you want to eventually clip them at home then try to find someone willing to show you how it's done correctly. Preferably a reputible breeder or vet. Both wings need to be clipped to the same length to avoid injury to the bird when they try to fly.

I've seen two methods of wing clipping from vets and both seem to work depending on what you are wanting it for. The most common clip is a straight cut across the non-blood outer flight feathers to various lenghts depending on how much you want to limit their flight ability. Another option that's being adopted by some vets is to clip just under the coverts on only the outer 2-3 flights (non-blood feathers).

But either way, it takes two people to clip a bird correctly and I strongly recomend having someone show you how to do it the first couple of times till you get the hang of it.

Good for you Pattyann ... always good if a reputable pet shop owner can do this for you. You were lucky that your pet shop was good enough to do it.

Kathym ... it's important to have someone who knows what they are doing to clip the birds wings for you. Especially if this is your birds first time to be clipped also.

Stand there with the professional person doing the job & watch them. Ask questions & instructions. Learn how they are holding the bird & how & if they use a light towel or a tube to place the birds face into to prevent biting. Just how many feathers should be trimmed ? How far do they trim the feathers back ? Ask about the scissors & medications needed to stop bleeding should the trim be too close to a blood feather. Ask how to stop the bleeding & tend to the wound if it happens. Learn as you go.

Might as well ask the professional to check the budgies nails at the same time. Long nails on birds are a problem too & not so easy to trim either !

LEARN EACH STEP CAREFULLY !

If you are not confident in handling your bird or birds & you try to do this & your bird struggles while you are trying to clip & something slips & goes wrong ... you & your bird can get hurt. And ... your bird will panic & lose trust in you . Besides the fact that they will bite the DICKENS outta yer hands or what ever is closest to it.

NOT NICE FOR YOU OR THE BIRD !

It's good you asked us. But I think the majority of us all figure. This is a serious job that can be complicated & it's hard to just tell someone how to do it. I mean ... We can all tell you its easy & simple & yadda yadda yadda. But we really don't know you & your birds & the relationship you have with your birds & how comfortable you are with them & them with you. So how can we really advise you safely ?

So .... LET A PROFESSIONAL SHOW YOU. You can see with your own eyes & then judge your ability with your relatioinship to your birds if you can be capable to handle this job in the future.

I'm sure you will be able to master this in the future.

But pay someone else to get bitten before you try it. :D Save your bandages & fingers !

I'd show you how to do it but you are about 2 hours south of me :D

Perhaps PM Sunnie... she might be able to help???

Lettuce has no nutrional value at all. It's made up mainly of water and often give birds(and other animals) the runs. Better greens include boc choy and silverbeet

I dont clip my own birds. My parrot I have done at the vet and the only budgies that WERE indoor pets a year ago, I also had the vet do. I am happy to recommend my vet to anyone down south, its quite affordable, neater and safer :)

I clip my own budgies... The petstore lady showed me how to do it. They need a cut this weekend actually, they got a few feathers that grew back and these little monsters just keep flying in the kitchen!

That's no good, silly birds! S'where the dogs hangs out and he just sees flying toys!

See? S'what the doggie will do to you if he catches yous.

And you're interestiiiiiiiing.

(that hole in the wall is next to their cages so they often hang out there. But they never cross to the kitchen there... Only through the door for some reason.)
