Hen Attacks Mate

Featured Replies

I was feeding the birds late afternoon and found one of the boys in the bottom of his breeder cage having been attacked by his hen. They have five chicks in the nest, the eldest nearly at the point of fledging.

Here is the cock shortly after I found him and had cleaned him up. ( deliberately blurred photos )

Despite the best of care, treatment and warmth of a hospital cage the boy died of shock within half an hour

MY guess is he put the "hard word" on her and she wasnt ready. I have removed her from the breeder cage in case she attacks the chicks and the chicks are in the kindie cage now with a group of other newly fledged chicks. I may have to crop feed them if they dont take to eating on their own. But the other chicks should show them how or some may feed the youngest ones.

Whoa thats the worst looking attack i've seen, poor bugger, man hens can be nasty

least his alive kaz

All the best.

Hugs Kaz.

Fingers crossed things will start looking up soon :hap: .

I'm so sorry Kaz :( He was gorgeous.

We are having bad time too, no animals died, but one morning we didn't close the gate properly and our two dogs run away. I had to chase them around in dark, and as they don't really listen, it wasn't easy  :hap: . I thought I will never see them again, a car could run over them or something. But luckily I got them. We must be much more careful :hap:

And our only car broke down, so more bad staff :hap:

so sad, I'm so sorry to hear about the losses Kaz.... has this hen ever had issues before and will you breed her again later?

No previous issues. Good mother. Some hens just dont want to be hassled for budgie sex before they are done raising the chicks, I guess. She will have a long holiday.

:) I am so sorry Kaz I know how you are feeling. Next week will be better I am sure. HUGS

Sorry to hear that news Kaz, I don't know what gets into them, when I had that trouble, the cock had been a good feeder & they were no where near starting to breed again, just one day she went crazy. Luckily I saw mine in time.

Oh Kaz, I'm so sorry to hear what happened. OMG - I was so luck that I found our hens fighting and got good advice before a disaster such as yours unfolded. I can only imagine how you are feeling you poor thing.

I know it may not be much consolation Karen, but I do believe that your wonderful selfless advice given in my time of desperate need for it has saved at least one if not both of our fighting hens as well as their 11 babies who are still growing and going strong.

My heartfelt sympathy and gratitude go out to you. With all my "budgie love", Greg

Many thanks Greg :D I am so excited for you and all those babies. Would love to see some more pictures when you get a chance.

Today...one of my hens decided to open up her eggs and investigate the contents....thereby killing some nearly ready to hatch chicks. Another hen on 10 eggs ( all her own ) had her first chick hatch and she threw the chick out of the nest into the breeder cabinet. So I warmed the chick until it was lively and gave it to a hen who was hoping for babies but her eggs were no good. She fed the chick and took it as her own, so I gave her 5 of the good eggs also from the "bad hen" . Here's hoping :(

Oh Kaz... so sorry. :( I'm sure your luck is bound to pick up! Keep you chin up. We're all here for you here... xxx
