When I need to move one of my budgies to another cage for reasons, I sometimes catch them in the evening. It can be really hard during the day as they can see you and fly all around the cage... when it's a little bit dark it seems to be easier. Do you think the time of the day matters? Is it okay for the budgies? We never let them fly around in the dark and we always turn a light on so they can see something.

I think when they are most calm would be best to minimise the stress. Our little Ernie is probably most calm just before sundown.

 

Ernie gets grumpy at night, if you try to give her a chest rub or neck scratch after dark, she gives you a little headbutt (not bite thankgod) telling you to leave her alone.

 

This morning she couldn't wait to get out of her cage...

I personally wouldnt be catching birds at night. That is their time for settling down for sleep and you in there chasing them about is stressful and a sign of danger to them. I always shift birds in the morning so they have all day to adjust to their new environment.

 

This is about catching non tamed aviary birds not inside tame pet type birds isnt it.

I agree with Kaz, first thing in the morning is best and then they have the day to have fun and settle.

Birds become calmer when it becomes dark because they can't see that well in the dark so they need to use their sense of hearing more. I personally let Merlin out during the morning and afternoon and he is in the cage during the evening.

Thanks I will catch my birds in the morning now.
